Winter Gentle Giants
The Cairngorm mountain range really comes into a special place of its own during the winter months. If you plan to go winter walking in Scotland, at any point, you should really consider a trip in the Cairngorms. This weekend is a brilliant introduction. Not only do you have the safety of being out with a qualified, experienced local guide, but you’ll also learn the essential safety skills you need to be safe when you’re out in the hills in winter. Enjoy winter walking in Scotland over this wee mini-break, based in the Cairngorms National Park.
You’ll begin with a refresher/introduction to basic winter walking skills. Learning how to use crampons and ice axe to stop a sliding fall, will keep you safe when we head out into the hills. We’ll aim to reach Cairngorm summit on the first day, after the skills training.
On day 2, we’ll be heading out into the high Cairngorms hoping to reach the summit of Ben Macdui or Sgor Gaoith or Bynack Mor. In winter the route choice is crucial. Ultimately the choice will depend on the prevailing weather conditions.

Scot Mountain Holidays is the ONLY adventure tour operator in Highlands of Scotland with a combined home and guest lodge. We strive to be more than just an tour. We aim to provide you with a ‘home away from home’ on your adventures. We thought of no better way of doing this than to welcome you into our own home.
We have owned and operated Fraoch Lodge as our home base and business since 1999. In that time, we have come to embrace our guests as members of our extended Highland family.
We source our meals from locally produced and home grown ingredients to provide you with the most delicious flavours and traditions the area has to offer (while minimising our impact on the environment, too). Our dining room and lounge are shared spaces where we gather with guests and friends to share in the holiday and offer you extensive knowledge of your tour.
No matter the season, the Cairngorms and Fraoch Lodge is a place to relax and explore all its beauty and comforts, and we hope to make you feel as at home as we are.
