Explore Torridon (Scotland) on foot

Torridon is in Wester Ross, Scotland. It’s an area on the west coast which has some of the most dramatic, broody scenery you could wish for. Torridon’s reputation in Scotland is wholly justified. A landscape of towering buttresses & a primeval feel – it is a very special area to visit even if you’re not hiking. For many this magnificent area provides the finest mountain days anywhere. I need say little more other than this holiday requires a good head for heights.

Liatach, one of the most iconic mountains in Torridon (Scotland), is instantly recognisable. It’s sharp ridge really is one of the hikes which should be on every hillwalker’s list. The pinnacles and ridges along the main ridge are avoidable if your head for heights is not up to the feeling of exposure, but if you like a wee bit of scrambling you’ll love this. The views are well worth the effort too.

The whole area is one of our favourite places to visit. The mountains here are unique, the area is really quiet and the views are to die for. The Torridon hills look across to the Cuillin range on Skye, to the West and through to ridge after ridge of towering ridges on the mainland.

Arrive: at pick-up points by stipulated time (see options below) on day before walking starts.

Day 1: The narrow ridges followed by the entertaining three Horns of the Jewel Mountain, Beinn Alligin, makes a very fine introduction to the Torridon mountains.

Day 2: Slioch – ‘the spear’ – rises fortress like to dominate the most beautiful of lochs, Loch Maree. A walk in mountain splendour and one of the Scotland’s classic peaks.

Day 3: The view of Liathach from Glen Torridon is stupendous. It’s eastern spine appears to rise sheer in a series of fortressed buttresses. We breach the defences of this huge monolith for a traverse along its sensational crest.

The Pinnacles on Liathach, Torridon. A classic view of one of the premier ridge walks in Scotland

Day 4: Rest day

Day 5: Beinn Eighe’s is another of Torridon’s Giants. Its northerly flanks thrust out rocky spurs to encircle deep corries with cliff skirted headwalls, the finest of which is Coire Mhic Fhearchair & it’s 1000ft triple buttress – one of the natural wonders of Scotland.

Day 6: Beinn Damh may be just short of Munro status but it doesn’t lack interest. Its dramatic east face of towering buttresses & huge cliffs makes it an equal amongst its neighbouring giants.

Depart: day after walking finishes after breakfast.

Scot Mountain Holidays will be hosting, guiding and catering with the best of Scottish produce. As there will be limited opportunities to restock our supplies while over in the Hebrides we will be planning the menu in advance and would ask that you make sure to give us all your requirements in advance. If there are any Scottish specialities you definitely don’t want to try, please say.

We have achieved Gold Star Awards from the world’s most highly respected green accreditation scheme, Green Tourism, and were awarded Highly Commended in their Green Star Awards 2013 for both Scot Mountain Holidays and Fraoch Lodge. We offer a Green Travel Discount of £15 to any guests who travel to us by public transport. It is a holistic approach we have to the care of the environment. Andy your adventure guide has a passion for the natural world – whether it’s the flora, fauna or fungi. He has a background in geology and a lifelong interest in natural history, as well as being a keen gardener.  He knows a Golden Plover from a Dotterel, a Green Shank and a Dunlin. He also makes no apologies to being very excitable upon spying a Golden Eagle!
