Andy, our lead instructor, has now been delivering Mountain Skills courses, Winter Skills courses and Navigation courses in the Cairngorms National Park for over 20 years. He’s amassed a large amount experience and has developed tried and tested coaching techniques through the feedback of many previous guests.
All the winter skills and navigation courses are delivered in a structured way relating the various skills and techniques to each other and not teaching them in isolation. His coaching techniques allow you to quickly grasp the concepts and winter skills or navigation and map reading skills, and you get a real understanding of the subject with you leaving confident in your choice of technique(s) in terms of the prevailing conditions and situation. Classroom work is generally kept to an hour at the beginning and the end of the day with the emphasis being on practical experience in the mountains.
As with all good coaching it isn’t all a one way street. Every mountain skills course, winter skills or navigation course is based from our own lodge meaning there is a plenty of opportunity for your feedback and informal discussion with Andy over meals, etc allowing a good degree of tailoring as the course progresses. With us the coaching is not just a 9 to 5 operation! The Cairngorms also provide us with a huge variety of terrain to practise there various skills from the testing high plateau with it’s steep flanks, to rolling moorland and beautiful Caledonian Pine Woodland.
This is all wrapped up with Rebecca’s delicious home cooking and Cake O’clock in front of a roaring fire. So come and visit the Cairngorms and give us the pleasure of helping you develop your skills and confidence in the beautiful Cairngorms National Park.
