Scotland Doesn’t Have “Real” Mountains?

If you’re dreaming about a family trip to Scotland, you may have come across this curious claim:

“Scotland doesn’t have real mountains.”

Usually said by someone who’s never stood in the Highlands.

Because once you arrive — once you step out into the cool Highland air and look up — the question disappears entirely.

Stac Pollaidh, Assynt, Scotland – north of Inverness

What Makes a Mountain “Real”?

Is it sheer height?

Or is it how small it makes you feel… in the very best way?

Ben Nevis rises to 4,413 ft (1,345m), the highest peak in the UK. But Scotland’s mountains aren’t about altitude alone. They’re about atmosphere.

They rise from sea lochs and ancient forests.
They glow purple with late-summer heather.
They hold snow well into spring.
They feel vast, open, and wonderfully uncrowded.

For families visiting from the US or Canada, there’s something quietly surprising about them. The scale feels big — but accessible. Wild — yet welcoming.

And there’s another detail that often brings visible relief: Scotland is predator-free.

No bears.
No cougars.
No venomous snakes.

You may see red deer, mountain hare, golden eagles overhead — but you can walk freely without the background worry that often comes with hiking in parts of North America. For many families, that makes exploring together feel more relaxed from the very first step.

Classic ridge walking on the ascent to Ben Nevis

The Cairngorms: Scotland’s High Mountain Heart

The Cairngorms are home to five of the UK’s six highest peaks. But what makes them special isn’t just the statistics.

It’s the space.

The high Arctic-like plateau.
The ancient Caledonian pine forests.
Red deer moving across distant slopes.
Sky that seems to go on forever.

This is where Fraoch Lodge sits — right in the heart of the mountains. No long transfers. No logistical juggling. Just a relaxed Highland base where you can settle in, be looked after, and step straight into the landscape with an experienced local guide.

For families in the dreaming stage, imagine this:

Your morning coffee looking out toward the hills

A guided walk designed to suit your pace

Your children learning real mountain skills in a safe environment

Stories of clans and landscapes woven into the day

Coming back to a warm welcome and a home-cooked two-course dinner

It’s adventurous — but without the stress.

On the way to Beinn Mheadhoin

Yes, We Have “Real” Summits

Scotland has over 280 mountains above 3,000 feet, known as Munros. For many visitors, standing on one becomes a highlight of their trip.

Not because it’s extreme.

But because it’s shared.

A summit photo with the whole family.
Wind in your hair.
Layers on.
Big smiles.

And if your Scotland dream includes dramatic island scenery, the jagged skyline of the Isle of Skye offers something entirely different — bold, cinematic, unforgettable.

Mountains for Real Life (Not Just Experts)

One of the biggest misconceptions about Scottish mountains is that they’re only for hardened climbers.

They’re not.

There are gentle giants and classic ridgelines. Shorter summit days and longer, sweeping expeditions. Snowshoeing in spring. Wildflower walks in summer. Golden light in autumn.

With the right guide — and the right local knowledge — Scotland’s mountains become accessible, educational, and deeply rewarding.

That’s especially important when travelling as a family from overseas. You want challenge, yes — but you also want confidence, safety, and someone quietly managing the details: the weather, the route choice, the backup plan.

So you can focus on being present.

So… Are They Real?

If “real” means dramatic scenery, shifting Highland light, and landscapes that stay with you long after you fly home — then yes.

If “real” means earning a summit together and feeling like you’ve stepped into something ancient and meaningful — then absolutely.

Scotland’s mountains may not scrape the sky like the Rockies.

But they have something else.

History. Atmosphere. Space. Story.
And the freedom to explore without looking over your shoulder.

If you’re in the early dreaming stage — imagining fresh air, wide horizons, and an active, meaningful family adventure — Scotland’s mountains are very real indeed.

And they’re waiting.

One of the quiet joys of hiking is the headspace it gives you.

Hours of steady movement, the rhythm of your breath, boots on the path — and suddenly the noise of everyday life fades. Out on the hill, you can solve the problems of the world (at least to your own satisfaction), replay conversations, plan the future, or simply enjoy the rare luxury of thinking one thought at a time.

And when the legs get tired, most of us have something in mind that keeps us moving forward.

Over the years, we’ve asked our guests what motivates them on a long day out walking. The answers are as varied as the people themselves — but a few themes come up again and again.

The Pull of the Summit

For many walkers, a clear goal makes all the difference.

For some, it’s the chance to finally tick a Munro.
For others, it’s standing on the highest point in a new area.
Sometimes it’s a long-planned route, or even being the first to explore a lesser-known line.

Whatever the goal, having a plan focuses the mind and gives purpose to each step. Of course, we’re always careful to remind our guests that the day isn’t over when you reach the top — the walk only truly ends when you’re back home, boots off and feet up.

Up on a summit on the remote peninsula of Knoydart with no sign of habitation for miles around

The Promise of a Good Lunch

Never underestimate the motivational power of a packed lunch.

Everyone has their own favourites, but a well-timed treat can transform a tough stretch of path. On our trips, we like to keep things varied: home-baked goodies alongside trail mix and savoury snacks.

Guests often tell us that knowing there’s something special waiting in their lunch box makes the miles pass that bit more easily — whether it’s gingerbread, raspberry and pine-nut bars, or a classic vanilla streusel square.

Food tastes better outdoors. That’s just a fact.

“What’s for Dinner Tonight?”

Dinner is another powerful incentive — and one that sparks a surprising amount of speculation.

Sometimes we keep it a surprise; sometimes guests ask outright. Either way, there’s often a good deal of guessing on the walk back. More often than not, we manage to hit someone’s favourite during the course of the week, which is always deeply satisfying.

After a full day on the hill, the thought of a warm, well-cooked meal can be enough to carry you through the final climb.

The Thought of a Pint

It won’t surprise anyone that a fair number of our guests are highly motivated by the idea of a pub at the end of the day.

For some, it’s almost a mirage — that imagined first sip that gets you through the final, toughest section of the route. Amazing how much faster everyone walks when there’s time for a beer before dinner.

Andy is particularly good at highlighting walks that just happen to finish near one of his favourite watering holes.

Pure coincidence, of course.

The best way of relaxing after a walk, no matter how hard or easy it may have been

Hot Showers, Open Fires and Simple Comforts

Back indoors, the motivations become wonderfully basic:

A hot shower, especially after a long or wet day, is hard to beat. Some guests will happily skip tea and cake in favour of getting straight under the water.

An open fire turns tired legs into relaxed ones, especially after winter walks or blustery Highland days.

A proper pint of tea — how British are you?

Cake, always cake. One of the great joys of hiking is knowing you’ve earned it. Low-calorie options rarely feature on the request list.

Why It All Matters

What’s striking is that nearly all these motivators boil down to the basics: food, warmth, shelter and rest.

Hiking strips life back to essentials. Out on the hill, the complicated becomes simple, priorities shift, and small comforts take on a new importance. It’s one of the reasons walking holidays are so restorative — they remind us how little we actually need to feel content.

Thinking of Hiking in Scotland?

If you’re dreaming of long days on the trail, good food, warm fires and welcoming places to rest at the end of it all, we offer a wide range of guided walking holidays and hiking vacations across the Cairngorms and the wider Highlands of Scotland.

We’d love to help you plan your next adventure — just get in touch for full details.

Frequently asked questions

Are the horses well-trained and accustomed to walking with guests?

Yes, the horses are very comfortable around people and are accustomed to us walking with them. They also work as riding ponies so are very used to being around people.

What should I do if I feel uneasy or scared during the walk?

Make sure you let your guide know if there are any issues at all during the walk but there is really no reason to feel at all uneasy if you are comfortable in the outdoors. There are no large predators in Scotland and there is something very comforting about walking in the company of the ponies whose rhythem is very calming.

Are helmets provided, and are they mandatory?

There is no need for guests to wear helmets as you will not be riding the ponies. You will be walking as a group between the 2 ponies who will be carrying the bags and camping equipment.

Is this a riding holiday?

No. This is a relatively gentle to moderately strenuous hiking and wild camping (hot tenting) trip accompanied by pack ponies Foxy and Maggie. The pones carry all the camping gear leaving you to carry little more than a day rucksack plus a change of clothing.

The number of people on the trip is from 2 – 5. Does this mean that as a single person I can’t book on this trip?

To offer this trip at the advertised price we need at least 2 people to book. If you are a single person trying to book on a trip that already has guests on it please just simply phone us (+44 1479 831 331) and we will book you on the trip. If you are a single person trying to book on a trip that as yet has no one else booked on please call us on the above number and we can put you on a waiting list.

Can I bring my dog?

We have made exceptions in the past but we do try to minimise the disturbance to the wildlife. Odours left by dogs in the natural environment can affect the wildlife. Also barking dogs very much increase the level of disturbance as well as there being a question mark with respect to how they behave around horses.

Can I bring my own pony/horse?

No. This is a hiking trip not a riding holiday. We may have guests on the trip who are not necessarily used to being around horses plus there would be a question mark as to whether the horses would get on with our ponies. Sections of the route in and out to our campsite are not suitable for riding due to overhanging branches. We also camp in any environmentally sensitive area so again want to minimise the disturbance.

What happens when it rains?

As the saying goes: ” there’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing.”

Would you have to cancel the trip if the weather was bad?

No, we have deliberately created a trip which can run in most kinds of weather without being dangerous. We can change the routes and activities a wee bit. The main thing is that everyone will remain safe and cosy.

Interaction with Horses:

Can I pet or interact with the horses before the walk?

Yes, you can pet the horses.

How do I approach a horse safely?

Ask the guides about the best way to approach the ponies, but try to make sure that you don’t walk behind them, and don’t approach them where they can’t see you as this may make them nervous.

Are there specific rules for feeding or treating the horses during the walk?

Always check with the pony handlers who usually carry mints as treats for the ponies during the walk. They will treat themselves a lot as they walk though. As with most “ruminant” animals, they need to eat a lot to produce enough energy for the day.

Experience Level:

Do I need any prior experience with horses to participate?

You don’t need any prior experience with horses or ponies to take part in the trip, but it is a good idea to know if you are comfortable around them before you sign up. The handlers will manage the ponies throughout the trip but ponie are sensitive to human emotions so always try to be calm and friendly when around them.

Are the walks suitable for beginners, or are they more advanced?

The walks are aimed to be suitable for almost anyone and can be managed to relatively young kids and older relatives too. If you are at all unsure, the details of the routes are listed in the trip information and you can discuss any concerns with us beforehand. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend bringing babies along but you know your child/children best – feel free to let us know your previous experience.

Trail Information:

What kind of trails will we be walking on?

The trails are mostly very well graded and suitable for all abilities but there are short sections of very rough going, especially close to our campsite – which keeps it private! You will need to wear full walking boots to keep your feet dry and your ankles well protected. Comprehensive route details are provided in the trip information including the stats on the length of walks and anticipated ascent etc.

Weather Considerations:

What happens if the weather is inclement?

Our trips are carefully scheduled in periods where the weather is traditionally benign. Despite the popular belief that our weather in the UK is unpredictable; there are periods when you can expect dry periods and also periods when we’d anticipate more precipitation.

Group Size and Guides:

How large are the walking groups, and is there a guide accompanying us?

Groups are small; no more than 8 people.

This is a guided trip. There will be a guide on all activities.

Physical Requirements:

Is there a weight limit for participants?

There is no weight limit for the people but there is a weight consideration for the bags the ponies are carrying.

Do I need to be physically fit to walk with horses?

You do need to be able to walk up to 10km without feeling under too much strain. If you are at all worried about the walk in, or walking during the trip then please don’t hesitate to give Andy a call. There is some rough walking immediately before the camp site because it is a true wild camp and ont on a prepared campsite.

Booking and Logistics:

How do I book a walking experience with horses?

You should be able to book directly on the website, but if you are looking for a private departure for your family or group of friends, please do contact us first with your preferred dates so we can put them aside for you.

What is the cancellation policy?

We charge a 25% deposit which is non-refundable. For full terms and conditions please check here.

Are there age restrictions for participants?

We don’t really recommend the trip for children under 8 or anyone with mobility issues. However, you know your capabilities best, so if you are any doubt just give us a call or send us a message.

Photography and Personal Items:

Can I take photographs during the walk?

Absolutely. Do take as many photos as you want. We’ll set up a WhataApp group and you’ll be able to share your photos with everyone in the group and us (if you want).

Is it advisable to bring personal items like water bottles or snacks?

It is advisable to bring your own favourite water bottle but we’ll provide plenty of snacks in your packed lunches (though usually not sweeties). There will be chocolate bars, sandwiches and other snacks and you will receive a request to let us know what your favourite snacks are so we can accommodate as many as we can.

It is a good idea to limit your personal possessions as much as possible as you could well end up carrying the majority of the extras. The ponies only have so much capacity and will be carrying all the heavy stuff like the tent, chairs, stove etc so you are comfortable at camp. You should have space for a pack of cards or Bananagrams though!

Post-Walk Care:

Are there facilities for washing up or cleaning after the walk?

You’ll be returning to Fraoch Lodge at the end of the trip to the room you had before you set off. You’ll have access to all the facilities at the Lodge and there are both a toilet and a shower tent at camp; so you don’t have to return smelly at all.

Can we spend time with the horses after the walk?

Absolutely – though the ponies are always keen to catch up with their mates in the herd at the end of the trip and may not want to hang around with us. At camp though you can spend time with both ponies.

Chasing the Light: Winter Sunrises, Sunsets & Night Skies in the Cairngorms

Winter in the Scottish Highlands offers some of the most extraordinary light of the year. With the sun hanging low in the sky and darkness arriving early, the season transforms the Cairngorms into a photographer’s dream — and a walker’s paradise for those who love quiet trails and dramatic skies.

The Unique Quality of Scottish Winter Light

In December, daylight in the Cairngorms lasts only about 6½ hours — roughly from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. This low sun angle gives rise to long shadows and a beautifully soft light that seems to paint the hills in shades of gold, rose, and icy blue.

Because the sun never climbs higher than about 12° above the horizon (compared to over 50° in summer), even midday light has the warm, angled quality photographers call the “golden hour.”

Best sunrise spots: Loch Morlich (for reflections of the Cairngorm plateau), Loch an Eilein (with its castle island framed by winter mist), and the summit of Meall a’ Bhuachaille (a short, rewarding climb near Glenmore).

Best sunset spots: The top of Craigellachie Nature Reserve above Aviemore, the shores of Loch Insh, or the moorlands around Dorback for open, west-facing views.

Once the sun dips below the horizon, the show continues overhead. The Cairngorms are part of a Dark Sky Park, one of the best stargazing areas in northern Europe. In winter, when skies are clearest, you can often see the Milky Way arching across the sky with the naked eye.

The northern lights are never guaranteed, but Scotland averages around 15–20 aurora sightings per year visible from the Cairngorms area — particularly in late autumn and midwinter.

Bring a tripod. Light levels drop quickly; even phone cameras benefit from stability for sharp images.

Check the weather and apps. Use tools like Clear Outside for cloud cover forecasts and AuroraWatch UK for northern lights alerts.

Photographers love Loch Garten at first light and at the end of the day, where the mist often rises through Scots pines, and Ryvoan Bothy near An Lochan Uaine for its emerald water against pink skies.

Shorter days and variable conditions encourage slower, more mindful exploration.

There’s something truly magical about watching your children discover something new. From forest trails filled with ancient Scots pines to the glistening waters of hidden lochans, the Cairngorms National Park is a giant outdoor playground for adventurous families—and Fraoch Lodge is your perfect base to explore it all.

Whether you’re travelling with young children, energetic teens, or even grandparents in tow, there are countless ways to enjoy the wild heart of the Highlands together. Here’s our guide to age-appropriate adventures that bring the generations closer while making the most of this spectacular setting.

Adventures for Primary School-Aged Children

Little legs don’t need to miss out on big adventures! At Fraoch Lodge, we know the secret trails and gentle routes that are just right for curious explorers aged 5–11.

Summer foraging and wildlife spotting
Children love the thrill of discovering what nature has to offer—and the Cairngorms are full of tasty treasures and wild wonders. On a gentle family walk through the Caledonian pine forest, we’ll help you identify edible plants like wood sorrel, wild bilberries, and blaeberries (in season). Keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels darting between the trees, roe deer in the glades, and the distinctive call of the crested tit. It’s a fun, hands-on way for young adventurers to connect with the natural world—safely and respectfully.

Andy can help you on a half day walk of exploration or you can join a ranger walk (if there are any scheduled during your visit). Or you can see what you can find on your own, but it is always more productive to tap into the local expertise.

Woodland Cycling Trails
The flat, wide trails around Glenmore and Loch Morlich are ideal for young cyclists. We’ll help you plan a route with plenty of snack stops, wild play areas, and safe space to roam. Cycle hire is available nearby, and we can even recommend balance-bike-friendly options for little ones just starting out. Don’t forget – Boat of Garten also has it’s very own pump track popular with wee bikers and skateboarders alike.

Paddling at Loch Garten or Loch Morlich
When the sun shines, families love to wade and splash along the sandy edges of the lochs. Pack a picnic from Fraoch Lodge, take a dip, skim some stones, and watch the osprey soar overhead. There’s nothing better.

Family-Friendly Hikes
Short walks like the Green Lochan (An Lochan Uaine) route are perfect for small feet and reward you with a magical, emerald-coloured loch said to be coloured by the local fairies. Myth, mystery, and manageable distances—what more could you ask for?

Adventures for Teenagers

Teenagers crave challenge, freedom, and a sense of achievement. The Cairngorms deliver all three in spades—and we’re experts in finding experiences that make teens put their phones away (willingly!).

Summit Challenges
If your family is up for a bit more adventure, we’ll guide you to lesser-known summits like Meall a’ Bhuachaille—a manageable hillwalk that still gives you those epic “on top of the world” views. Perfect for teens who want bragging rights!

Mountain Biking in Glenlivet or Laggan Wolftrax
Adrenaline-loving teens can test their skills at one of the local trail centres, with routes ranging from beginner to black-grade. Bike hire and guiding can be arranged, and we’ll pack you off with a hearty breakfast and plenty of post-ride snacks.

Rock Climbing and Gorge Walking
We can link you up with trusted local activity providers offering supervised outdoor adventures. From scrambling up riverbeds to abseiling down crags, these experiences give teens the thrills they love—with the safety parents appreciate.

Wilderness Photography & Instagram Walks
For the creatively inclined, a walk up to Ryvoan Bothy or around the Cairngorm Ski area is packed with photogenic moments—ancient stone walls, dramatic skies, and stunning Highland backdrops.

Adventures for Multigenerational Families

Traveling with grandparents, parents, and kids? The Cairngorms shine when it comes to inclusive activities that suit all generations. We’re happy to help tailor the perfect balance of comfort and adventure.

Rothiemurchus Estate
From gentle strolls to farm shop visits, wildlife hides, and scenic viewpoints, Rothiemurchus is ideal for relaxed, nature-rich outings. Feed the deer, visit the working farm, or enjoy tea and cake while the kids run free.

Scenic Walks with a Story
Our guided low-level walks are a big hit with older guests. You’ll hear local legends, learn about Highland history, and discover flora and fauna you’d never notice without a guide. Routes like the Dell Woods or Inshriach Forest trails offer shade, peace, and benches for a breather.

Meals Together, Memories Forever
At Fraoch Lodge, our family-style dining brings everyone together at the end of the day. With home-cooked meals using local ingredients (and plenty of kid-approved favourites), it’s a chance to relax, reconnect, and plan tomorrow’s adventures.

Your Home-from-Home
Our family-friendly rooms, drying room, and warm hospitality make Fraoch Lodge a stress-free hub for exploring. We’re happy to help with logistics, packed lunches, gear hire, and insider tips—so you can spend more time enjoying the Highlands and less time organising.

Why Choose Fraoch Lodge for Your Family Adventure?

We’re a family-run business who’ve raised our own child right here in the Cairngorms. We understand what it takes to make a holiday work for every age, from buggy-friendly strolls to big-day-out mountain hikes.

Our guided walking holidays can be tailored for families—or you can base yourself at the Lodge and explore under your own steam, with plenty of advice from us.

At Fraoch Lodge, your family adventure begins the moment you arrive.

Ready to Plan Your Trip?

Unplug and Explore: A Family Adventure in the Highlands of Scotland

If you’re an active family with kids aged 12 and up, yearning for an unforgettable adventure, look no further than the Highlands of Scotland. Scot Mountain Holidays offers a unique 2-day, 3-night experience designed to immerse you in the stunning landscapes and rich history of the Cairngorms. Here’s a glimpse into what awaits your family on this off-the-beaten-track journey.

Day 1: Arrival and Welcome Dinner

Your adventure begins with a warm welcome at Fraoch Lodge. Arrive later in the day and join us for a delicious dinner made from local produce, much of it sourced from our own garden (except in the depths of winter). Over dinner, we’ll chat about your travels, families, and plans for the days ahead. Andy, our experienced guide, will check the weather and suggest a route for the following day’s hike. He’ll also ensure you have the right gear, as Scottish mountain hikes offer few opportunities for last-minute changes or resupplies.

Day 2: Guided Hike with Andy

Wake up to a hearty breakfast of your choice, prepare your packed lunch from an array of fresh options, and get ready for a day of exploration. Andy, who has been guiding in the Cairngorms for about 25 years, will lead you on a hike designed to familiarize you with the area. His deep knowledge of the landscape and its history will make this an enriching experience. You’ll learn about the unique flora and fauna, geology, and environmental conservation efforts in the region.

After your hike, return to the lodge where tea, cake, and a cozy fire (weather permitting) await you. Before dinner, we’ll review the weather and plan your route for the next day. This time, you’ll be on your own but fully equipped with a map, route description, and any necessary transportation arranged by us.

Day 3: Self-Guided Adventure

Start your day with another delicious breakfast and prepare for your self-guided hike. Armed with the knowledge and experience gained from your day with Andy, you’ll set out on a personalized route designed to match your ambitions and the prevailing weather conditions. Whether it’s a linear trail offering new vistas or a loop showcasing the diverse landscapes of the Cairngorms, you’re in for an adventure.

One of the highlights of hiking in this region is the chance to encounter wildlife. The Cairngorms are home to capercaillies, crested tits, reindeer, pine martens, wild cats, and the rare red squirrel. You never know what you might see on your journey.

At the end of your hike, we’ll pick you up and bring you back to the lodge for more tea, cake, and relaxation by the fire. This simple formula of eat, sleep, hike underlies all our trips, ensuring you’re well-fed and rested for each day’s adventure.

Departure: Refreshed and Rejuvenated

On your final morning, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and soak in the last moments of your Highland retreat. Despite the physical exertion, you’ll leave feeling mentally refreshed and ready to return home with memories of an incredible family adventure.

Only 120,000 red squirrels are left in Scotland.

The Modern Struggle: Searching for Balance

In today’s fast-paced world, we are constantly bombarded by negativity, confined within office walls, and often motivated by little more than financial gain. At the same time, we watch others experience more, travel more, and seemingly live more. Despite saying “I’m fine,” many of us feel that something is missing. So, how do we restore balance and wellness in our lives?

Looking Back: What Our Ancestors Knew About Well-Being

Our early ancestors lived much simpler lives, focused on survival—finding food, managing the weather, and protecting their territories. Despite their challenges, they thrived by working alongside nature. Today, though we still innovate and create, our setting has drastically changed. The natural world that once sustained us is now hidden behind high-rise buildings, leaving many disconnected from the great outdoors.

Posing amid the grandeur of the Cairngorms scenery

The Rise of ‘Wild Therapy’

A psychologist friend of mine often speaks about “wild therapy,” a practice that encourages people to step outside their usual indoor routines and engage with nature. Our ancestors’ daily lives required them to move, explore, and adapt. Today, we must make a conscious effort to do the same. Even a simple walk can make a world of difference.

Why Walking is Good for You

2. Improve Your Mood & Reduce Stress

Walking in nature releases dopamine and serotonin—chemicals in the brain responsible for happiness and well-being. These neurotransmitters help reduce stress, anxiety, and even depression.

3. Combat Loneliness & Build Social Connections

Humans evolved in tribal communities, and we have an innate need to connect with others. Walking introduces opportunities to meet new people, share experiences, and engage in positive interactions that boost mental health.

4. Boost Cognitive Function & Creativity

Research suggests that being in natural environments—whether green (land-based) or blue (water-based)—enhances cognitive function, memory, and creativity. It’s no surprise that spending time outdoors can lead to clearer thinking and fresh perspectives.

5. Increase Your Energy & Fitness

It may be tough at first, especially when tackling uphill climbs (I know this firsthand!), but persistence pays off. Regular walking improves endurance, strengthens muscles, and increases overall energy levels.

6. Achieve a Sense of Accomplishment

Sometimes, getting out of bed is an achievement in itself. But when you challenge yourself—whether it’s bagging a Munro or simply completing a scenic walk—you’ll feel a deep sense of satisfaction. That summit selfie is more than just a picture; it’s a reminder of your resilience.

7. Reconnect with Nature & Breathe Fresh Air

Life moves fast, and it’s easy to get caught up in the rush. Taking time to step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and appreciate the natural world can be a simple yet powerful act of self-care.

Unlike many modern remedies for stress and fatigue, walking has no downside. It promotes better sleep, improves overall health, and is entirely free.

Take the First Step

You don’t have to embark on an extreme expedition to reap the benefits of walking. Start small—choose a nearby trail, explore a new part of town, or plan a short walking holiday. If you need inspiration, we at Fraoch Lodge would love to help you begin your journey.

5 Reasons to Visit the Cairngorms in Spring

Spring in the Cairngorms brings longer days, milder temperatures, and a renewed sense of life across the landscape. As the snow melts and the valleys turn green, this is one of the best times of year to experience the natural beauty of Scotland’s largest national park. Whether you’re a keen walker, wildlife enthusiast, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, here are five great reasons to visit the Cairngorms in spring.

1. Spectacular Spring Wildlife

As winter retreats, the Cairngorms become a haven for wildlife. Red squirrels, pine martens, and roe deer become more visible, while ospreys return to their nests after wintering in Africa. The hills echo with the calls of black grouse and capercaillie, making spring an exciting time for birdwatchers.

Red squirrels and mountain hare are also becoming more active. We also have beavers and wildcat which you might be able to spot if you’re lucky.

Scot Mountain Holidays offers guided trips that provide the best chances to spot these elusive species in their natural habitat.

Unique wildlife and scenery plus so much more

2. Ideal Conditions for Walking and Cycling

Spring offers some of the best conditions for exploring the mountains and glens, with crisp mornings, comfortable daytime temperatures, and trails that are much quieter than in summer. Whether you prefer a gentle riverside stroll or a challenging hill walk, the Cairngorms cater to all abilities. For cycling enthusiasts, the drier trails and improved weather make it a fantastic time for both road biking and mountain biking.

3. A Burst of Colour Across the Landscape

The transformation of the Cairngorms in spring is truly stunning. Heather moorlands, ancient forests, and meadows come alive with wildflowers, and fresh green leaves begin to cover the trees. It’s also one of the best times to visit the ancient Caledonian pine forests, where new life is emerging and the scent of pine fills the air.

4. Fewer Crowds, More Tranquillity

Spring is a fantastic time to experience the Cairngorms without the summer crowds. Many of the most popular trails and viewpoints remain quiet, allowing for a more peaceful connection with nature. If you’re looking for a true escape, staying at Fraoch Lodge offers a comfortable and welcoming base to explore the area without the rush of peak season tourism.

Posing amid the grandeur of the Cairngorms scenery

5. Exciting Local Events

Spring brings a variety of events to the Cairngorms, from walking festivals to family-friendly activities. The Ballater Walking Festival in May is a great way to explore the area with expert guidance, while events like the Highland Games taster sessions provide an insight into local traditions. There are also several cycling and trail running events for those looking for a challenge in a spectacular setting.

Plan Your Spring Getaway

The Cairngorms in spring offer a unique mix of adventure, wildlife, and relaxation. Whether you want to enjoy the landscape in full bloom, take part in outdoor activities, or simply soak up the tranquillity of the Highlands, Scot Mountain Holidays and Fraoch Lodge provide the perfect base for your visit.
5. Total whisky experience –

No trip to Scotland is complete without sampling some of its finest whiskies! Visit the Speyside Cooperage to see the craftsmanship behind whisky casks, then explore a nearby distillery of your choice. If you’re an early riser, you might even catch a tour at Dalwhinnie Distillery! Glenfarclas Distillery or Tomintoul Distillery! Watch out for road closures around Tomintoul though in April and early May 2025.

We also offer Mountains & Malts tours—ask us for details!

6. Climb a Munro

There are a huge number of Munros accessible from Fraoch Lodge. There are Munros to climb almost from the doorstep in the Cairngorms National Park. You can also use Fraoch Lodge as your base and venture further afield. However, with Ben Macdui (2nd highest in Scotland) and Braeriach (3rd highest in Scotland), you shouldn’t need to travel far for a good workout. Do make sure you put your safety first though. This year (2018) with Easter being so early and a good covering of snow remaining, it would be a good idea to either take a local guide or make sure you have refreshed your snow skills before you venture into the hills. Contact us for a private guiding or instruction booking.

The hikers in the sunshine deep in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park (more snow than most of January).
7. Easter Treasure Hunt & Gourmet Chocolate-Making

Turn Easter into an adventure with geocaching or set up your own treasure hunt around the stunning Cairngorms landscape! And for a special Easter treat, our very own Rebecca is training in gourmet chocolate-making—so you could enjoy homemade chocolates straight from Fraoch Lodge!

Stay with us for a delicious Easter experience!

FREE ACTIVITY

8. Wild Swimming and watersports

Spring may still bring chilly waters, but for the brave-hearted, Loch Morlich and Loch Insh offer fantastic opportunities for wild swimming, canoeing, and kayaking. If you’re new to wild swimming, pick up a guidebook or ask us for the best local spots!

9. Go skiing

Yes, you can still ski at Easter (some years)! The Cairngorm Mountain ski area often holds snow well into April, offering great conditions for skiing, snowboarding, and sledging. Equipment hire and lessons are available locally. Check how much skiing is available before you book. The funicular is running again but currently (04.03.25) there is extremely limited skiing on Cairngorm, no firm base and warm weather.

10. Enjoy an adrenaline rush

Get your heart racing with an exhilarating ride on the G2 Outdoor Zip Line, just outside Aviemore. Soar over the forest canopy for an unforgettable thrill—perfect for families and adventure lovers.

Plan Your Easter Getaway at Fraoch Lodge

Make the most of Easter 2025 with a stay at Fraoch Lodge, your home away from home in the Cairngorms. Whether you want an action-packed adventure or a relaxing retreat, we’ll help you create the perfect itinerary.

Book your accommodation at Fraoch Lodge now! Contact us for custom holiday packages and guided adventures.

Family walks in the Cairngorms

In no particular order we’ve listed 10 of our favourite family walks in the Cairngorms. We’ve concentrated on the area we know best around the northern side of the park, but we do also know of some excellent walks on the south side of the park which we’ll mention in passing with reference to more detailed information at the end of the blog.

We’ve concentrated on walks which you can do with younger children as once your kids reach a certain age, they’re capable of achieving just as much on a day hike as any other adult.

Ascending Meall a’Bhucaille with 2 x 7 year olds and 1 x 4 year old.

The walks

1. Loch an Eilean

Of the family walks available in the Cairngorms, this is one of the most popular, also frequented by some of the minibus tour companies like Rabbies.

The walk takes about 2 hours or 4.5 miles

It is a lovely walk to do. You don’t have to do the whole walk but the path is suitable for push chairs, particularly those with 3 wheels or larger wheel sizes.

The ruined castle on the island in the loch lends the situation a romantic aura. The area has featured in Outlander and the new Netflix extravaganza about King Arthur.

The optional extension around the neighbouring loch, is almost deserted. The path is wide and mostly through lovely open Caledonian pines. Even on a wet day, it is picturesque.

In summer, you can snack your way round on the wild bilberries which line the path in places.

Map of the route, courtesy of Walk Highlands.

The famous castle on Loch an Eilean, Glens, Forests and Lochs

2. Green Lochan (or on to Ryvoan Bothy)

An easy walk to fit into a bigger day of activities. Going up to the Green Lochan and back to your car will only take about 1 hour.

1.2 miles: 26 mins (one way)

Start at Glenmore Lodge or the Forestry Commission Visitor Information Centre in Glenmore. Parking at the end of the road by Glenmore Lodge is limited and on a fine day you may find that there is no space there. If you are parked at the end of the road, near the visitor information centre, you will end the walk at the Cobbs cafe. A cake break here makes a fine reward at the end of the day.

The path is wide and easy to find up to the Green Lochan. It starts from the road end and continues straight up to the Green Lochan. Allow time to stop at the lochan take in the views and maybe even dabble your toes in the water. There’s a great spot for photos too.

If you want a longer route

If this is not enough of a walk for you and your family the route continues on to Ryvoan Bothy. The Bothy is a basic shelter, like a refuge. It is free to use and does not have a warden. The main thing to remember is that you should not leave anything at the bothy which wasn’t there when you arrived. You can spend the night at Ryvoan Bothy, but be prepared for some competition for the “bed” space. There is a small stove in the bothy, so providing you have fuel, you should be warm enough.

Here’s a link to the map of Walk Highland’s version of this walk which can also be done as a there and back route from your car parked outside Glenmore Lodge for a shorter route.

Perfect spot to rest up after a wee walk. Popular in the middle of the day.

3. Loch Mallachie & RSPB Loch Garten

This is a lovely walk at any time of year in almost any weather conditions. The majority of the walk is through mature Caledonian pine forest which bears no resemblance whatsoever to commercial forestry. The trees are not all straight nor are they planted in rows. The undergrowth is lush and often filled with treasures like wild blueberries, cowberries or mushrooms. You could see a red squirrel, roe deer, crested tits, ospreys etc

At Loch Garten you have the option of visiting the Osprey Hide and hearing the ongoing saga of the Osprey centre (April to August only).

Including Loch Mallachie on your circuit is a must. It is a beautiful spot and really quite peaceful. Sunrise is glorious here if you’re an early riser.

2 – 3 hours: 9km, plus walk through Boat of Garten to the car park if you are starting from Fraoch Lodge

Map courtesy of Walk Highlands

The peaceful scenery of Loch Mallachie, near Boat of Garten

4. Viewpoint walk, Grantown on Spey

This is a short way-marked circular route of 5km.

You’ll start either from the centre of Grantown, or from the caravan park (though parking is limited here). The route starts on a tarmaced track leading off left past the caravan park. You’ll then pick up signs for the Dava Way and the viewpoint walk to the right. Follow the track up the hill along the side of the stream. You’ll pass a couple of points where you can admire the view over Grantown to the Cromdale hills before reaching the ultimate viewpoint marker, atop a small rocky outcrop. Here you’ll find a viewpoint marker indicating all the mountains etc you can see.

Continue on from the viewpoint to make the walk a circular route, finishing up along the old railway track which is now part of the Dava Way.

There are opportunities to Geocache along the way if you feel the need to add a bit of interest to the walk.

For a full route description try Walk Highlands

5. River Walk, Nethy Bridge

This is a really short walk suitable for even the youngest members of the family. It follows the river Nethy from the bridge in the centre of Nethybridge up towards the Dell of Abernethy. There are also plenty of opportunities to extend the walk along the local network of paths, the majority of which are waymarked.

You can also pick up a map at the information centre in the village hall right at the start of your walk.

There are alternative routes out to Broomhill station and Castle Roy on the other side of Nethybridge.

Make more of a day out of it

Take the steam train from Boat of Garten to Broomhill. Follow the walking route into Nethybridge and either pick you way to the river where there is a wee beach where you can relax. You can paddle in the shallows too. But watch out, because there are deeper patches in the middle of the river. Don’t try to wade out to the other side.

From here you could also pick up the Speyside way and walk all the way back to Boat of Garten which is no more than 5 miles and probably less. It’s a great walk with plenty of opportunities in the summer to stop and snack on bilberries (wild blueberries).

There are plenty of Geocache possibilities in Nethybridge too to keep the kids focused.

6. Ellan Woods, Carrbridge

Ellan Woods are again filled with Geocache boxes. Even if you don’t travel that far, the kids will have a great time trying to retrieve as many prizes as they can.

Parts of the off-road route 7 cycle path also pass through Carrbridge.

If you’re looking for a longer alternative, we do include a Carrbridge circuit in our self-guided Cairngorm itinerary. You could also take a look at the week long itinerary of self-guided walks: we could adapt this trip for your group.

Another alternative: Sluggan Bridge

Sluggan bridge as a walk on it’s own is suitable for almost anyone to do. It is just a quick stretch of the legs, but can easily be extended and is such as lovely spot that you can easily spend an afternoon there with the kids. Dabble in the water and have a picnic.

7 Craigellachie Nature Reserve

This is a wee favourite of ours. A little jaunt up to a viewpoint above Aviemore, or if you have really wee ones just go to the wee lochans. You’d hardly know you’re right next to the A9.

The walk is about 5km so probably not one for really young ones. Parts of it were a wee bit icy when we did it (admittedly that was March and really only to be expected). Lovely walk which breaks out of the birch forest to provide spectacular views as below. Some steep sections but easily managed by anyone of moderate fitness. Walking poles advised if you are not used to hill walking.

Map from Walk Highlands

Spectacular and unusual views from the viewpoint above Craigellachie Nature Reserve

8. Boat of Garten to Aviemore

Well worth a wee gander across the moor to Aviemore. You follow the route of the Strathspey Railway most of the way to Aviemore as well as the course of the river Spey. This is part of the Speyside Way. It is a well maintained wide path. You’ll be heading towards the Cairngorms so spectacular views of the mountains. The only downside is that there is very little shelter for the majority of the route though the beginning and the end are protected by trees.

Points of interest:

You can come out into Aviemore on the Dalfaber estate, right next to Cairngorm Brewery. Worth a stop? They do brewery tours! Also near here: Kilted Fudge (for the kids to pick up a treat) and Route 7 Cafe.

You can return by steam train to Boat of Garten if you time it right, or alternatively take the public bus service (no. 34) back to the village.

5 to 6 miles, depending on how far into Aviemore you go.

9. Meall a Bhuacaille

We’ve already covered this option in some detail in a previous blog. Do click on the link for full details. This is a very popular family walk. Plenty of treats for the younger kids to encourage them to the top.

10. Ascent of Cairngorm

This is quite a walk for wee kids, but don’t forget if it’s your first attempt and the kids get tired, you usually have the option of taking the funicular train back down (providing you remember your wallet).

Again it is easy to extend this walk if you want or keep it short and just pop in at the Ptarmigan restaurant at the top for snacks and refreshments.

Do not attempt this walk with young kids in the winter months.

From the ski car park to the summit is: just over 4km, 2 – 2.5 hr walking

Route map and description

Remember: there is no shelter or shade on this walk. Cairngorm is sub-arctic tundra. Most of the vegetation is less than knee high. There are trees but they are of the dwarf variety and don’t even reach you knees. You’d have to know what you’re looking at to identify them as trees!

A family day out on the summit of Cairngorm (with diversions to hunt for snow)
