“Getting There Is the Easy Part” – Transport Realities for Groups Without Cars

If you’re the person everyone looks to when a group trip is proposed, transport is often where the responsibility really starts to feel heavy — especially overseas. Driving on the left, unfamiliar roads, jetlag, and getting a whole group to the right place at the right time can turn what should be an exciting plan into a source of stress.

When trying to organise a group hiking tour in another country, transport is one of the major headaches. This is particularly the case when you’re travelling to a country where you either don’t speak the language, or in this case, where the locals drive on the other side of the road. So when your group is more than an average family in size – what do you do about transport? Do you drive yourselves? Do you book a private hire/driver? Do you go with public transport passes? All valid options with pluses and minuses.

If you decide to hire a vehicle

What you’ll need to consider if you’re going to hire a vehicle/vehicles

You may need more than one driver. How many of your group are comfortable driving on the left hand side of the road? Will you need to book automatic transmission vehicles, which are less common in the UK than abroad? For group organisers, this often raises an additional question: who is ultimately responsible if something goes wrong? Can you get all your drivers insured and will this be an additional hassle you could do without. Read the small print carefully – we have had independent travellers who’ve been caught out by small print in hire contracts, particularly relating to foreign credit/debit cards

If you’re planning some hiking as all or most of your tour, you will inevitably end up on smaller, more rural roads which are very narrow and often windy; not to be under-estimated especially at the beginning of your trip when the drivers may also be suffering from jetlag. In fact, in more remote areas the roads may not only be narrow, but even be “single track”. There’s a whole separate etiquette for dealing with single track roads.

Single track roads:

always stay on your side of thr road (THE LEFT)

if the passing space is on the right hand side of the road stop on your side and let the oncoming traffic use the passing space to go around you.

These are manageable once you’re used to them — but they can be intimidating for first-time visitors, especially when you’re conscious of a group relying on you

Trailheads

This is not a term which is commonly used in the UK. We’re far more likely to talk about where the parking area is for a particular route. Unlike many US hiking areas, access points in the Highlands aren’t designed for large volumes of cars or groups arriving simultaneously — something that can catch overseas groups by surprise. Some of these parking areas are little bigger than passing spaces or only big enough for small number of vehicles. Again this is something it is worth bearing in mind when planning your trip. Do you want the hassle of searching for parking? And don’t forget the expense as well. Fewer and fewer parking areas are free of charge these days.

Jetlag

If you’re planning to drive, you should plan around jetlag. We do relatively frequently hear news reports of fatal accidents on the Scottish roads due to tourists accidentally driving on the wrong side of the road. This is much more easily done when you’re tired. One way to avoid this would be to plan a couple of days in or around the city of your arrival before starting the hiking part of your vacation. This way you can adjust to the new time zone before taking on the additional challenge of driving on unfamiliar roads and on what is for you the “wrong” side of the road. or volunteer organisers, this is one of the biggest hidden risks: tired drivers, unfamiliar road rules, and the pressure of getting everyone there safely

Public transport options

We have an excellent public transport system in the UK, but where it falls down for hiking groups is that access to the start of the trail is rarely in the same place as the train station/bus stop and many trails, particularly in the Highlands, can only be accessed in a private vehicle. Also multiple tickets on public transport are probably going to work out as expensive, if not more expensive than hiring a vehicle. You might even want to compare the costs with those of arranging private transport, including a driver.

For organisers, the key question is often not ‘is public transport possible?’ but ‘does it reduce stress for the group — or add to it? Co-ordinating tickets could be an additional headache you could do without.

How can we help

For many hiking groups the solution isn’t doing everything yourselves — or handing everything over — but working with a local partner who understands both the terrain and the realities of group leadership.

If you’re arranging a hiking trip in the Highlands with your friends/hiking club, you might want to consider the following services:

airport transfers
→ Your group arrives together, rested, and oriented — without anyone needing to drive on day one.

hike planning & trailhead transport
→ Walks matched to your group’s ability, with logistics handled quietly in the background. Also worth bearing in mind when trying to select hikes is that we have very different land access rights – something we can help you understand (loads of other articles on our blog which help to understand the Scottish Outdoor Access Code).

arranging hikes from our home base
→ A shared base removes daily packing, reduces decision fatigue, and strengthens the social side of the trip.

You remain the trusted organiser for your group but we can work in partnership with you to make sure you all have a smooth experience and the group’s expectations are met or exceeded.

There’s something truly magical about watching your children discover something new. From forest trails filled with ancient Scots pines to the glistening waters of hidden lochans, the Cairngorms National Park is a giant outdoor playground for adventurous families—and Fraoch Lodge is your perfect base to explore it all.

Whether you’re travelling with young children, energetic teens, or even grandparents in tow, there are countless ways to enjoy the wild heart of the Highlands together. Here’s our guide to age-appropriate adventures that bring the generations closer while making the most of this spectacular setting.

Adventures for Primary School-Aged Children

Little legs don’t need to miss out on big adventures! At Fraoch Lodge, we know the secret trails and gentle routes that are just right for curious explorers aged 5–11.

Summer foraging and wildlife spotting
Children love the thrill of discovering what nature has to offer—and the Cairngorms are full of tasty treasures and wild wonders. On a gentle family walk through the Caledonian pine forest, we’ll help you identify edible plants like wood sorrel, wild bilberries, and blaeberries (in season). Keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels darting between the trees, roe deer in the glades, and the distinctive call of the crested tit. It’s a fun, hands-on way for young adventurers to connect with the natural world—safely and respectfully.

Andy can help you on a half day walk of exploration or you can join a ranger walk (if there are any scheduled during your visit). Or you can see what you can find on your own, but it is always more productive to tap into the local expertise.

Woodland Cycling Trails
The flat, wide trails around Glenmore and Loch Morlich are ideal for young cyclists. We’ll help you plan a route with plenty of snack stops, wild play areas, and safe space to roam. Cycle hire is available nearby, and we can even recommend balance-bike-friendly options for little ones just starting out. Don’t forget – Boat of Garten also has it’s very own pump track popular with wee bikers and skateboarders alike.

Paddling at Loch Garten or Loch Morlich
When the sun shines, families love to wade and splash along the sandy edges of the lochs. Pack a picnic from Fraoch Lodge, take a dip, skim some stones, and watch the osprey soar overhead. There’s nothing better.

Family-Friendly Hikes
Short walks like the Green Lochan (An Lochan Uaine) route are perfect for small feet and reward you with a magical, emerald-coloured loch said to be coloured by the local fairies. Myth, mystery, and manageable distances—what more could you ask for?

Adventures for Teenagers

Teenagers crave challenge, freedom, and a sense of achievement. The Cairngorms deliver all three in spades—and we’re experts in finding experiences that make teens put their phones away (willingly!).

Summit Challenges
If your family is up for a bit more adventure, we’ll guide you to lesser-known summits like Meall a’ Bhuachaille—a manageable hillwalk that still gives you those epic “on top of the world” views. Perfect for teens who want bragging rights!

Mountain Biking in Glenlivet or Laggan Wolftrax
Adrenaline-loving teens can test their skills at one of the local trail centres, with routes ranging from beginner to black-grade. Bike hire and guiding can be arranged, and we’ll pack you off with a hearty breakfast and plenty of post-ride snacks.

Rock Climbing and Gorge Walking
We can link you up with trusted local activity providers offering supervised outdoor adventures. From scrambling up riverbeds to abseiling down crags, these experiences give teens the thrills they love—with the safety parents appreciate.

Wilderness Photography & Instagram Walks
For the creatively inclined, a walk up to Ryvoan Bothy or around the Cairngorm Ski area is packed with photogenic moments—ancient stone walls, dramatic skies, and stunning Highland backdrops.

Adventures for Multigenerational Families

Traveling with grandparents, parents, and kids? The Cairngorms shine when it comes to inclusive activities that suit all generations. We’re happy to help tailor the perfect balance of comfort and adventure.

Rothiemurchus Estate
From gentle strolls to farm shop visits, wildlife hides, and scenic viewpoints, Rothiemurchus is ideal for relaxed, nature-rich outings. Feed the deer, visit the working farm, or enjoy tea and cake while the kids run free.

Scenic Walks with a Story
Our guided low-level walks are a big hit with older guests. You’ll hear local legends, learn about Highland history, and discover flora and fauna you’d never notice without a guide. Routes like the Dell Woods or Inshriach Forest trails offer shade, peace, and benches for a breather.

Meals Together, Memories Forever
At Fraoch Lodge, our family-style dining brings everyone together at the end of the day. With home-cooked meals using local ingredients (and plenty of kid-approved favourites), it’s a chance to relax, reconnect, and plan tomorrow’s adventures.

Your Home-from-Home
Our family-friendly rooms, drying room, and warm hospitality make Fraoch Lodge a stress-free hub for exploring. We’re happy to help with logistics, packed lunches, gear hire, and insider tips—so you can spend more time enjoying the Highlands and less time organising.

Why Choose Fraoch Lodge for Your Family Adventure?

We’re a family-run business who’ve raised our own child right here in the Cairngorms. We understand what it takes to make a holiday work for every age, from buggy-friendly strolls to big-day-out mountain hikes.

Our guided walking holidays can be tailored for families—or you can base yourself at the Lodge and explore under your own steam, with plenty of advice from us.

At Fraoch Lodge, your family adventure begins the moment you arrive.

If your idea of wild camping food involves a foil packet, a spork, and a vague sense of disappointment, it’s time to reset your expectations. At Scot Mountain Holidays, we believe that wild camping—true wild camping, where your tent is pitched at least an hour’s hike from the nearest road—should never mean compromising on food. Quite the opposite.

We take pride in serving hearty, home-cooked meals, freshly prepared and dehydrated at Fraoch Lodge before each expedition. Our wild camping menu isn’t just about sustenance—it’s about celebration. It’s part of the experience, a moment to savour, surrounded by heather, hill, and wildlilfe.

Each evening, we serve a two-course dinner, piping hot and packed with flavour. Imagine tucking into a velvety Thai spinach soup or a warming carrot and cardamom blend, accompanied by freshly baked bannocks or damper bread—cooked right there at camp.

For mains, you might enjoy a rich sausage casserole, or perhaps a comforting lentil spaghetti bolognese for a vegetarian twist. The beauty of preparing everything ourselves means we can tailor meals to suit the group—without compromising on nutrition or taste.

And yes, we sometimes go a step further. When the mood strikes (and the weather allows), we offer desserts: wild berry fruit crumble, or our personal favourite—camp cranachan, made with toasted oats, whisky cream (alcohol-free options available), and seasonal berries. Just because you’re off-grid doesn’t mean you can’t indulge a little.

Sustainable, Homemade, Thoughtful

You won’t find a single commercial packaged meal in our rucksacks. All our expedition meals are made from scratch at Fraoch Lodge, then dehydrated and portioned into reusable or recyclable packaging. It’s part of our commitment to minimising waste and making outdoor adventures more sustainable.

Not only does this approach reduce our environmental footprint, it also ensures we know exactly what’s in each dish—because we made it ourselves.

Also Available on Highland Wilderness Glamping; Knoydart Winter Wilderness; our Snow Hole Expedition; Fisherfield Munros; and High Cairngorm Backpacking (private groups only)

If wild camping sounds appealing but you’re not sure about carrying a heavy pack, this is the ideal alternative. You’ll still eat like a king or queen under the stars, but without the physical demands of a full backpacking expedition.

These trips are about more than just walking. They’re about stepping away from the noise and bustle, slowing down, and rediscovering the pleasure of simple things—good food, good company, and wild places. Meals become a highlight of the day, not just for the flavour but for the connection they create—with each other and with the landscape.

If you’re dreaming of a truly immersive experience in the Scottish Highlands—where even the food is part of the adventure—our guided wild camping expeditions or Highland Wilderness Glamping trips might be just what you’re looking for.

Unplugging in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park

We recently experienced a loss of broadband service here at Fraoch Lodge. It was panic stations all round.

We live in a world where our phones tell us the weather, the time, the route, what to eat, how to feel, and when to sleep. We wake up to the glow of notifications and go to bed after “just one more scroll.” But what happens when you switch it all off—even for a weekend?

Would you be able to enjoy a digital detox weekend?

At Fraoch Lodge, nestled in the tranquil village of Boat of Garten, we believe the answer is a resounding yes—and more than that, we believe your mind and body will thank you for it.

Why Try a Digital Detox?

A digital detox doesn’t mean living in silence or boredom. It means swapping screens for real scenery. It’s giving your nervous system a break from pings and scrolls. It’s waking up not to headlines, but to birdsong and Highland air.

Studies show that taking regular breaks from screens can:

Improve sleep and reduce stress

Reconnect you with nature and your companions

Boost creativity and attention span

Reduce feelings of comparison, FOMO, and overwhelm

Our new Digital Detox Weekends are designed to ground you gently, not shock you into silence. You’ll still be busy—just in a completely different way.

What You’ll Do:

We get it. The idea of switching off entirely can feel uncomfortable. But don’t worry—you’ll be supported. We have:

We’re lucky to be based in the Cairngorms National Park—a vast wilderness of forest, mountain, and wildlife. From the doorstep of Fraoch Lodge, you can follow quiet trails without seeing another soul, listen to woodpeckers drum in Abernethy Forest, or spot red squirrels.

Nature invites stillness. It rewards attention. And it waits patiently while you relearn how to just be.

When to Come?

Our Digital Detox Weekends run on select dates during the quieter seasons—spring and autumn are ideal, when the Cairngorms are alive with birdsong, wildflowers, or autumn colour.

These retreats are especially popular around:

Unplug and Explore: A Family Adventure in the Highlands of Scotland

If you’re an active family with kids aged 12 and up, yearning for an unforgettable adventure, look no further than the Highlands of Scotland. Scot Mountain Holidays offers a unique 2-day, 3-night experience designed to immerse you in the stunning landscapes and rich history of the Cairngorms. Here’s a glimpse into what awaits your family on this off-the-beaten-track journey.

Day 1: Arrival and Welcome Dinner

Your adventure begins with a warm welcome at Fraoch Lodge. Arrive later in the day and join us for a delicious dinner made from local produce, much of it sourced from our own garden (except in the depths of winter). Over dinner, we’ll chat about your travels, families, and plans for the days ahead. Andy, our experienced guide, will check the weather and suggest a route for the following day’s hike. He’ll also ensure you have the right gear, as Scottish mountain hikes offer few opportunities for last-minute changes or resupplies.

Day 2: Guided Hike with Andy

Wake up to a hearty breakfast of your choice, prepare your packed lunch from an array of fresh options, and get ready for a day of exploration. Andy, who has been guiding in the Cairngorms for about 25 years, will lead you on a hike designed to familiarize you with the area. His deep knowledge of the landscape and its history will make this an enriching experience. You’ll learn about the unique flora and fauna, geology, and environmental conservation efforts in the region.

After your hike, return to the lodge where tea, cake, and a cozy fire (weather permitting) await you. Before dinner, we’ll review the weather and plan your route for the next day. This time, you’ll be on your own but fully equipped with a map, route description, and any necessary transportation arranged by us.

Day 3: Self-Guided Adventure

Start your day with another delicious breakfast and prepare for your self-guided hike. Armed with the knowledge and experience gained from your day with Andy, you’ll set out on a personalized route designed to match your ambitions and the prevailing weather conditions. Whether it’s a linear trail offering new vistas or a loop showcasing the diverse landscapes of the Cairngorms, you’re in for an adventure.

One of the highlights of hiking in this region is the chance to encounter wildlife. The Cairngorms are home to capercaillies, crested tits, reindeer, pine martens, wild cats, and the rare red squirrel. You never know what you might see on your journey.

At the end of your hike, we’ll pick you up and bring you back to the lodge for more tea, cake, and relaxation by the fire. This simple formula of eat, sleep, hike underlies all our trips, ensuring you’re well-fed and rested for each day’s adventure.

Departure: Refreshed and Rejuvenated

On your final morning, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and soak in the last moments of your Highland retreat. Despite the physical exertion, you’ll leave feeling mentally refreshed and ready to return home with memories of an incredible family adventure.

Only 120,000 red squirrels are left in Scotland.
5. Total whisky experience –

No trip to Scotland is complete without sampling some of its finest whiskies! Visit the Speyside Cooperage to see the craftsmanship behind whisky casks, then explore a nearby distillery of your choice. If you’re an early riser, you might even catch a tour at Dalwhinnie Distillery! Glenfarclas Distillery or Tomintoul Distillery! Watch out for road closures around Tomintoul though in April and early May 2025.

We also offer Mountains & Malts tours—ask us for details!

6. Climb a Munro

There are a huge number of Munros accessible from Fraoch Lodge. There are Munros to climb almost from the doorstep in the Cairngorms National Park. You can also use Fraoch Lodge as your base and venture further afield. However, with Ben Macdui (2nd highest in Scotland) and Braeriach (3rd highest in Scotland), you shouldn’t need to travel far for a good workout. Do make sure you put your safety first though. This year (2018) with Easter being so early and a good covering of snow remaining, it would be a good idea to either take a local guide or make sure you have refreshed your snow skills before you venture into the hills. Contact us for a private guiding or instruction booking.

The hikers in the sunshine deep in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park (more snow than most of January). Taken April/May 2017.

7. Easter Treasure Hunt & Gourmet Chocolate-Making

Turn Easter into an adventure with geocaching or set up your own treasure hunt around the stunning Cairngorms landscape! And for a special Easter treat, our very own Rebecca is training in gourmet chocolate-making—so you could enjoy homemade chocolates straight from Fraoch Lodge!

Stay with us for a delicious Easter experience!

FREE ACTIVITY

8. Wild Swimming and watersports

Spring may still bring chilly waters, but for the brave-hearted, Loch Morlich and Loch Insh offer fantastic opportunities for wild swimming, canoeing, and kayaking. If you’re new to wild swimming, pick up a guidebook or ask us for the best local spots!

9. Go skiing

Yes, you can still ski at Easter (some years)! The Cairngorm Mountain ski area often holds snow well into April, offering great conditions for skiing, snowboarding, and sledging. Equipment hire and lessons are available locally. Check how much skiing is available before you book. The funicular is running again but currently (04.03.25) there is extremely limited skiing on Cairngorm, no firm base and warm weather.

10. Enjoy an adrenaline rush

Get your heart racing with an exhilarating ride on the G2 Outdoor Zip Line, just outside Aviemore. Soar over the forest canopy for an unforgettable thrill—perfect for families and adventure lovers.

Plan Your Easter Getaway at Fraoch Lodge

Make the most of Easter 2025 with a stay at Fraoch Lodge, your home away from home in the Cairngorms. Whether you want an action-packed adventure or a relaxing retreat, we’ll help you create the perfect itinerary.

Book your accommodation at Fraoch Lodge now! Contact us for custom holiday packages and guided adventures.

Family walks in the Cairngorms

In no particular order we’ve listed 10 of our favourite family walks in the Cairngorms. We’ve concentrated on the area we know best around the northern side of the park, but we do also know of some excellent walks on the south side of the park which we’ll mention in passing with reference to more detailed information at the end of the blog.

We’ve concentrated on walks which you can do with younger children as once your kids reach a certain age, they’re capable of achieving just as much on a day hike as any other adult.

Ascending Meall a’Bhucaille with 2 x 7 year olds and 1 x 4 year old.

The walks

1. Loch an Eilean

Of the family walks available in the Cairngorms, this is one of the most popular, also frequented by some of the minibus tour companies like Rabbies.

The walk takes about 2 hours or 4.5 miles

It is a lovely walk to do. You don’t have to do the whole walk but the path is suitable for push chairs, particularly those with 3 wheels or larger wheel sizes.

The ruined castle on the island in the loch lends the situation a romantic aura. The area has featured in Outlander and the new Netflix extravaganza about King Arthur.

The optional extension around the neighbouring loch, is almost deserted. The path is wide and mostly through lovely open Caledonian pines. Even on a wet day, it is picturesque.

In summer, you can snack your way round on the wild bilberries which line the path in places.

Map of the route, courtesy of Walk Highlands.

The famous castle on Loch an Eilean, Glens, Forests and Lochs

2. Green Lochan (or on to Ryvoan Bothy)

An easy walk to fit into a bigger day of activities. Going up to the Green Lochan and back to your car will only take about 1 hour.

1.2 miles: 26 mins (one way)

Start at Glenmore Lodge or the Forestry Commission Visitor Information Centre in Glenmore. Parking at the end of the road by Glenmore Lodge is limited and on a fine day you may find that there is no space there. If you are parked at the end of the road, near the visitor information centre, you will end the walk at the Cobbs cafe. A cake break here makes a fine reward at the end of the day.

The path is wide and easy to find up to the Green Lochan. It starts from the road end and continues straight up to the Green Lochan. Allow time to stop at the lochan take in the views and maybe even dabble your toes in the water. There’s a great spot for photos too.

If you want a longer route

If this is not enough of a walk for you and your family the route continues on to Ryvoan Bothy. The Bothy is a basic shelter, like a refuge. It is free to use and does not have a warden. The main thing to remember is that you should not leave anything at the bothy which wasn’t there when you arrived. You can spend the night at Ryvoan Bothy, but be prepared for some competition for the “bed” space. There is a small stove in the bothy, so providing you have fuel, you should be warm enough.

Here’s a link to the map of Walk Highland’s version of this walk which can also be done as a there and back route from your car parked outside Glenmore Lodge for a shorter route.

Perfect spot to rest up after a wee walk. Popular in the middle of the day.

3. Loch Mallachie & RSPB Loch Garten

This is a lovely walk at any time of year in almost any weather conditions. The majority of the walk is through mature Caledonian pine forest which bears no resemblance whatsoever to commercial forestry. The trees are not all straight nor are they planted in rows. The undergrowth is lush and often filled with treasures like wild blueberries, cowberries or mushrooms. You could see a red squirrel, roe deer, crested tits, ospreys etc

At Loch Garten you have the option of visiting the Osprey Hide and hearing the ongoing saga of the Osprey centre (April to August only).

Including Loch Mallachie on your circuit is a must. It is a beautiful spot and really quite peaceful. Sunrise is glorious here if you’re an early riser.

2 – 3 hours: 9km, plus walk through Boat of Garten to the car park if you are starting from Fraoch Lodge

Map courtesy of Walk Highlands

The peaceful scenery of Loch Mallachie, near Boat of Garten

4. Viewpoint walk, Grantown on Spey

This is a short way-marked circular route of 5km.

You’ll start either from the centre of Grantown, or from the caravan park (though parking is limited here). The route starts on a tarmaced track leading off left past the caravan park. You’ll then pick up signs for the Dava Way and the viewpoint walk to the right. Follow the track up the hill along the side of the stream. You’ll pass a couple of points where you can admire the view over Grantown to the Cromdale hills before reaching the ultimate viewpoint marker, atop a small rocky outcrop. Here you’ll find a viewpoint marker indicating all the mountains etc you can see.

Continue on from the viewpoint to make the walk a circular route, finishing up along the old railway track which is now part of the Dava Way.

There are opportunities to Geocache along the way if you feel the need to add a bit of interest to the walk.

For a full route description try Walk Highlands

5. River Walk, Nethy Bridge

This is a really short walk suitable for even the youngest members of the family. It follows the river Nethy from the bridge in the centre of Nethybridge up towards the Dell of Abernethy. There are also plenty of opportunities to extend the walk along the local network of paths, the majority of which are waymarked.

You can also pick up a map at the information centre in the village hall right at the start of your walk.

There are alternative routes out to Broomhill station and Castle Roy on the other side of Nethybridge.

Make more of a day out of it

Take the steam train from Boat of Garten to Broomhill. Follow the walking route into Nethybridge and either pick you way to the river where there is a wee beach where you can relax. You can paddle in the shallows too. But watch out, because there are deeper patches in the middle of the river. Don’t try to wade out to the other side.

From here you could also pick up the Speyside way and walk all the way back to Boat of Garten which is no more than 5 miles and probably less. It’s a great walk with plenty of opportunities in the summer to stop and snack on bilberries (wild blueberries).

There are plenty of Geocache possibilities in Nethybridge too to keep the kids focused.

6. Ellan Woods, Carrbridge

Ellan Woods are again filled with Geocache boxes. Even if you don’t travel that far, the kids will have a great time trying to retrieve as many prizes as they can.

Parts of the off-road route 7 cycle path also pass through Carrbridge.

If you’re looking for a longer alternative, we do include a Carrbridge circuit in our self-guided Cairngorm itinerary. You could also take a look at the week long itinerary of self-guided walks: we could adapt this trip for your group.

Another alternative: Sluggan Bridge

Sluggan bridge as a walk on it’s own is suitable for almost anyone to do. It is just a quick stretch of the legs, but can easily be extended and is such as lovely spot that you can easily spend an afternoon there with the kids. Dabble in the water and have a picnic.

7 Craigellachie Nature Reserve

This is a wee favourite of ours. A little jaunt up to a viewpoint above Aviemore, or if you have really wee ones just go to the wee lochans. You’d hardly know you’re right next to the A9.

The walk is about 5km so probably not one for really young ones. Parts of it were a wee bit icy when we did it (admittedly that was March and really only to be expected). Lovely walk which breaks out of the birch forest to provide spectacular views as below. Some steep sections but easily managed by anyone of moderate fitness. Walking poles advised if you are not used to hill walking.

Map from Walk Highlands

Spectacular and unusual views from the viewpoint above Craigellachie Nature Reserve

8. Boat of Garten to Aviemore

Well worth a wee gander across the moor to Aviemore. You follow the route of the Strathspey Railway most of the way to Aviemore as well as the course of the river Spey. This is part of the Speyside Way. It is a well maintained wide path. You’ll be heading towards the Cairngorms so spectacular views of the mountains. The only downside is that there is very little shelter for the majority of the route though the beginning and the end are protected by trees.

Points of interest:

You can come out into Aviemore on the Dalfaber estate, right next to Cairngorm Brewery. Worth a stop? They do brewery tours! Also near here: Kilted Fudge (for the kids to pick up a treat) and Route 7 Cafe.

You can return by steam train to Boat of Garten if you time it right, or alternatively take the public bus service (no. 34) back to the village.

5 to 6 miles, depending on how far into Aviemore you go.

9. Meall a Bhuacaille

We’ve already covered this option in some detail in a previous blog. Do click on the link for full details. This is a very popular family walk. Plenty of treats for the younger kids to encourage them to the top.

10. Ascent of Cairngorm

This is quite a walk for wee kids, but don’t forget if it’s your first attempt and the kids get tired, you usually have the option of taking the funicular train back down (providing you remember your wallet).

Again it is easy to extend this walk if you want or keep it short and just pop in at the Ptarmigan restaurant at the top for snacks and refreshments.

Do not attempt this walk with young kids in the winter months.

From the ski car park to the summit is: just over 4km, 2 – 2.5 hr walking

Route map and description

Remember: there is no shelter or shade on this walk. Cairngorm is sub-arctic tundra. Most of the vegetation is less than knee high. There are trees but they are of the dwarf variety and don’t even reach you knees. You’d have to know what you’re looking at to identify them as trees!

A family day out on the summit of Cairngorm (with diversions to hunt for snow)

What does ‘off the beaten track mean to you’? Depending on how adventurous you are, the phrase can mean different things to different people. It can be scary to choose the path less travelled by, but the benefits from getting off the beaten track in Scotland are exhilarating.

Topping out on the Innaccessable Pinnacle in glorious sunshine weather, Skye May 2016

But, this certainly doesn’t mean you need to skip all the top sites like Loch Ness. For some, getting out of cities is rural enough and therefore Loch Ness is a great choice. But for those feeling adventurous and wanting to get a little more remote, we can help you there.

So, how to find a place where few people go?

Wanting to find a little peace and quiet is the most natural thing in the world whether you’re most at home surrounded by nature, a city dweller or somewhere in between. And arguably, there is no better place than the Highlands of Scotland. Known for its epic beauty, contrasting scenery and out of this world views, you’ll soon find yourself where the air and water are fresher and the most prominent noises keeping you company is nature at its finest.

The Cairngorm National Park is the ideal base for you to experience and explore the remoteness the Highlands can offer. Depending how far off the beaten track you want to get you’ll find an array of options suited for all fitness levels and ages. Offering options to be guided, or self exploration if you prefer, Scot Mountain Holidays has it all.

We understand that only you know what getting off the beaten track means. But, Scot Mountain Holiday trips, by definition are all off the beaten track. It’s unlikely you’ll see crowds of people during any typical day with us. Choosing one of our trips is a great way to decide if the more unusual spots and a more active vacation is the way forward for you.

Whether you’re after hiking, mountain biking, walking or countryside relaxation, you’ll find it here. We can help organise a tailor-made trip for you, friends and family. Or, you can join one of our scheduled trips where you’ll meet like-minded people and gain friends for life. The choice is yours.

The wild camping, the isolation, the hiking, the heated tipi’s with their innovative ventilation, … We think our Highland Wilderness Glamping Trips are some of the most Covid safe adventure holidays going.

In addition to the measures we’re taking and asking guests to take, here are those measures we are taking with regards to our pack pony supported hiking trips.

What makes our Highland Wilderness Glamping trips Covid safe adventures:

Covid Safe Hiking and Guiding

Ventilation:

Walking is intrinsically much safer since it’s an outdoor activity. Air currents disperse droplets and aerosols quickly. Additionally the movement involved in the activity further aids the process. If social distancing is maintained outdoors, it’s extremely difficult to receive an adequate infectious dose that overwhelms a healthy immune system.

“The risk outside is incredibly low especially if you stay two-metres apart… Droplets fall to the ground quite quickly and aerosols are dispersed by air movements and even more by breezes and winds.”

“outside activities pose very little, if any, risk of new infections“.

“In one Chinese study of nearly 1,300 transmission events, only one occurred outside and they broke social distancing rules,”

Keith Neal, Emeritus Professor of the Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases, University of Nottingham

Additionally, in a Downing Street briefing, Jonathan Van-Tam, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England said:

“there is a definite truism across all of the science literature that ventilation is a most critical part of reducing transmission from respiratory viruses”.

“[normal breezes and air currents appeared to quickly disperse] any kind of plumes of anything. So from that perspective, it is absolutely categorically clear that outdoor spaces with higher degrees of ventilation are less problematic environments for transmission than indoor spaces.”

Physical distancing

This is also a lot easier in the outdoors. We ask guests to observe 2 m social distancing and to have a face covering at hand should it be quickly needed. A Buff is ideal. “Close contact” is defined as spending 15 minutes within 2 meters of an infected person.

When we talk about “close contact” it’s important to point out that we’re not looking for people the person may have passed on the street or in a shop, as the risk in these situations is very low. A close contact involves either face to face contact or spending more than 15 minutes within 2 metres of an infected person.

Nick Phin, Public Health Matters Blog, Public Health England.

Why 15 minutes within 2 meters?

It’s were there is appreciable risk of you taking onboard an adequate viral dose for your immune system to become overwhelmed and hence become ill.

If we do come across other people on the trail our passing is only momentary and it doesn’t qualify as “close contact” The risk in this regard is very small.

Hand sanitiser:

We will be passing through gates, etc on the hike so we ask guests to carry their own bottle. Due to the large number of local whisky distilleries we have no problem sourcing hand sanitiser! We have a very large container of it at base to refill your dispenser/container.

A wild camp all to ourselves

We have always tended to head to the quieter areas as we are likely to see more wildlife. Our Highland Wilderness Glamping Covid safe family adventure trips are no exception. The Scottish Highlands are one of the least inhabited areas of Europe. With an average population density of 9 people per square km, they are comparable only to northern Scandinavia. This compares to an average of 400 people per square kilometre in England. The distribution is far from even, creating huge uninhabited areas! If you know where to go it’s quite easy to avoid people.

With all the major Scottish cities being more than 2 hours drive away and with so much countryside, it isn’t difficult to escape up here in the Cairngorms. One of the main ideas behind this concept is to camp in comfort in some of the most beautiful, remote and secluded locations. Our overnight wild camp is reached by leaving the trail and picking up the faintest deer trail! We can pretty much guarantee we will have the location to ourselves!

Covid Safe Tentipi Living:

We think a large Tentipi heated with a woodburner, provides a covid safe environment to socialise. Here’s why:

Social Distancing:

With over 23 square meters of floor space in our Tentipi Safir 9’s, it’s possible to seat 6 people and still maintain 2 m social distance! Yes, a hexagon with 2 m sides will comfortably fit inside an octagon with 2.1m sides!

Covid safe ventilation:

As previously stated ventilation is the key in reducing the chance of transmission. One of the design characteristics of the Tentipi (Nordic Tipis) is their ventilation. Designed to accommodate an open fire, intake vents (11 in graphic) around the base of the Tentipi allow air to flow into the tent while ventilation in the apex (9 & 10 in graphic) allows smoke to escape.

During summer months this ventilation happens passively as a greenhouse effect develops within and the warmed air rises. The woodburner running enhances it greatly.

Dry Air:

An additional effect of warming the air is the drop in its relative humidity. This potentially has positive implications with respect to airborne transmission. There is presently some debate as to the role of airborne transmission. In dry air aerosols (less than 5 microns) can evaporate very quickly, in less than one-tenth of a second! This drying process potentially damages the virus preventing it being infectious i.e. it disinfects.

The portable woodburner sits in the centre of the Tentipi with the flue rising 3.1 meters to the apex. Further heated by the flue increases airflow and reduces relative humidity. Sitting 2 m apart around the stove, expired air drifts up and out of the top vents.

Tentipi Fabric

The main tent fabric is an impregnated polycotton canvas and is hence breathable. The benefits are 2 fold. In combination with a heat source (camp woodburner) it helps dry the air for the benefits explained above. Secondly it is a porous service;

Preliminary research published in The New England Journal of Medicine indicates the virus doesn’t survive on porous surfaces for more than 24hrs. Porous surfaces, like wood, cardboard and natural fabrics are thought to have a dehydrating effect on the virus.

The same research found the virus may remain viable on plastic (polypropylene) and stainless steel (AISI 304) for up to three days. On copper, well known for its antimicrobial properties, it lasts for no more than four hours.

To be on the safe side though our approach is to simply air the tent for 72 hours between groups.

Tentipi Floor

A wet cloth and soap solution cleans the groundsheet at the end of the evening. Yes, soap is a disinfectant! It works by breaking up the exterior cell wall of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

Sleeping.

We make the simple rule that each household sleeps in separate tents on this covid safe adventure.

Camp Bedding

Each Exped Deep Sleep System comes with its own pumpsack. Whilst on the move this acts as a stuff sac keeping everyone’s bedding separate. Come the end of the trip, camp sheets, pillow cases, duvet covers and pump-sacks are laundered in the normal way. Sleeping mattresses, duvets and pillows are cleaned and not used for 72 hours.

Food Preparation and Eating

“In general, because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from food products or packaging.”

Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, USA Government

“Although it is very unlikely that COVID-19 is transmitted through food or food packaging, as a matter of good hygiene practice anyone handling food must wash their hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.”

Guidance for food businesses on coronavirus (COVID-19), UK Government

In addition to general good hygiene as above, guides preparing food for the group will wear a face covering. With a hot camp wood burner sterilising the Stainless Steel eating utensils is easily.

Group Size

Depending on the number of households involved we are accepting a maximum of 4 to 6 guests on these covid safe adventure trips.

Scheduling between trips.

As previously stated, research has found the virus doesn’t survive beyond 72 hours on any surface. In addition to doing the regular cleaning we leave 72 hours between trips to add an extra level of security.

We hope you agree our Highland Wilderness Glamping Trips provide a covid safe family adventure.

Hiking with kids is not always a fun experience but our top tips could change that around for you. Boat of Garten, Scotland is rich in natural beauty. Its rural setting lends itself to plenty of hiking opportunities for not only individuals, but also families.

So, if you’re looking to go hiking with your kids around Boat of Garten, here are 8 great tips on how to make the best of your trip:

Prep And Plan

“Every hiking trip has to be planned and prepped for,” says Madeleine Walder, a travel blogger at State of writing and Essay Roo. “This is especially important when you bring your kids along for the trip. You’ll need to plan your day with the kids in mind – when they’ll be energetic, when they’ll get tired, and so on.”

Here are things you’ll need to pack for everyone in the family:

Food (including snacks)

Water

A working phone and back up power pack

First aid kit

Sun hats

Midge repellent – there are organic and less chemical repellents available on the market now. One of our favourites is the bog mrytle scented body cream from Highland Soap. (Bog mrytle is a plant which grows wild in the Highlands of Scotland and is disliked by midges.)

Sunscreen

A guide book

A map, preferably a local OS Map either 1:50,000 or 1:25,000. A paper map will show a larger area than our phone screen and could prove to be a valuable back up, especially if your phone runs low on battery power. Mapping/GPS tracking apps tend to consume a lot of battery power.

A female walker seen sitting down resting and studying her map, wearing her boots and waterproof clothing, with her rucksack and walking poles, Cairngorm Mountains, Scotland.
Model Release
Photograph by David Mansell 07831 559901 mobile

2. Dress Accordingly

Next, it’s important to dress for the trip. Consider the following scenarios:

Be ready for any times of rain. That’s why you should bring rain clothes, in case wet weather shows up.

Make sure you have plenty of thin layers as these will give you more options for the changing weather conditions than fewer thick layers. In Spring, it is very common to experience 4 seasons in one day.

However, no matter the hiking weather, be sure to have the right clothing, including:

Adequate hiking boots – for Scotland, especially the Highlands, it is a really good idea to make sure that everyone in the family has walking boots which support your ankles. The terrain is often rough with boulders or streams to cross. Walking boots will not only support your ankles but should help keep your feet dry and warm.

Hats

Gloves

spare socks, AND

A change of clothes

Spring is a great time to get the kids out hiking. There’s still snow to play in but it’s not as bitterly cold as winter.

3. Choose Varying Trails And Terrains

Children love to explore. So, when choosing a trail, look for the following features:

Rocks

Bridges

Logs

Creeks

Boardwalks, AND OR

Other interesting features

For example, Frank Bruce’s Sculpture trail at Insh; Gruffalo walk in Culloden Woods; Boat of Garten to Loch Garten – plenty of fallen trees to explore as it is the RSPB policy to leave fallen wood where it lies for the other forest beasties to benefit from.

Who knows? Your kids will come up with great adventure ideas when they’re on the hike. With wild imaginations, anything is possible for kids.

What fun teetering along the trunk of a fallen tree.

4. Invite Friends

Why hike by yourselves, when you can take friends along for the trip?

Kids might have friends that they want to invite to the trip. So, feel free to let them invite friends over for the trip. Just make sure that your child’s friend(s) are well-prepared for the trip.

If you have a dog, then you can let them join your trip as well! But again, everyone (including Fido) will need to be prepped for the trip.

5. Take Breaks

It’s natural for people to take breaks. Now, with kids, they’ll need to take plenty of breaks, especially when they’re hiking. Even if they start complaining that they’re not tired just yet, you’ll still need to have them break.

On the other hand, kids will complain about being tired. Again, that’s why it’s important to plan for frequent stops.

Now, when you and the family stop for a break, don’t just sit down somewhere. Also, make sure that everyone “refuels,” meaning that you all take in some food and drink before continuing the hike. A snack favorite for kids is a medley of snacks, including trail mix. Wild food/foraging could become a new favourite if you’re out at the right time in the right place.

6. Be Positive

Hiking is about enjoying yourself. Although your kids might whine about something along the way, why not spin it around with fun questions like:

“What did you think about the river we saw earlier?”

“I can’t wait to see the big bridge. Are you?”

“What color flowers have you seen so far?”

The idea of asking questions is to keep your child engaged, and to prevent them from feeling bored or sad.

Also, treat your child with respect. If your child is visibly tired after a while, then it’s time to go home.

7. Take It Easy

“When hiking with your kids, it’s okay to relax,” says Cameron O’Neill, a lifestyle writer at Lia Help and Boomessays. “Try not to think about the time passing by, when you don’t have anything else planned for the day. Focus on hiking with the family. Focus on taking in nature, and enjoying it with your kids. Remember: There’s no hurry. Take your time. Take it easy.”

8. Make Hiking A Family Tradition

Family traditions create memories that last a lifetime. So, why not make hiking a family tradition?

Whether you and the family take hiking trips monthly or yearly, this family tradition is for you to create. This family tradition also allows children to embrace nature as much as possible.

Conclusion

As you can see, hiking in Boat of Garten, Scotland can be a fun experience for you and your child. Therefore, take these 8 tips, and have fun (and be safe) hiking with the family!

If you’re looking for more help and advice planning your walks in the Cairngorms, or if you’d like to try one of our ready-made itineraries please get in touch.

Top tip from Scot Mountain Holidays: Experience has also taught us that having animals along on the walk helps to motivate the kids to keep going.
