Self-guided: Lairig Ghru Logistics
Self-guided: Walk Britain’s most spectacular mountain pass. The 18 mile route through the Lairig Ghru was used by drovers, thieves and soldiers. It cuts right through the heart of the high Cairngorm splendour. From the high point its sides rise sheer for another 1500 ft to 4 of the 5 highest peaks in Britain – awesome scenery and a worthy challenge.
Friendly reception when we arrived from Gregor. 2 nights dinner, bed and breakfast, with great food – thanks, Rebecca. Delivery to Linn of Dee to start the walk, and expert advice on the logistics from Andy. Gruelling day with pissing rain and headwind, but we made it and were glad to see Andy arriving to pick us up at Whitewell, with cupcakes to take the edge off the weariness. 3 excellent hosts who made us welcome at Fraoch Lodge – hghly recommended!
We went at the end of July to take the opportunity offered to walk the Lairig Ghru one way. We received useful advice on taking on the walk and a very prompt and efficient drop-off and collection service … dinner on two evenings and the food cooked by Rebecca is inventive, excellent and a highly recommended option. As advertised the cakes are superb and are offered at crucial times as energy levels start to expire after a long day exploring the Cairngorms. Fraoch Lodge offers a wide range of experience to suit many visitors. I cannot believe anyone will regret spending some time, whatever their interests, located as it is in such a beautiful part of the world.

Eve of Arrival: On arrival at Fraoch Lodge you are welcomed with tea and coffee in time for one of Rebecca’s delicious evening meals and briefing on the following day’s route.
Day 1: The days starts with an early breakfast before we head off on the lovely drive around to Linn of Dee (90 mins) for the start of the route. The walk first heads past long abandoned townships as you head up Glen Lui past Derry Lodge and then into the southern end of the Lairig Ghru. (2 ½ hrs)
As the dramatic prow of Devils point looms you enter the classic glaciated “U” – your first site of the Lairig Ghru. The scenery very much has a big mountain feel as we first make a gentle then more steady ascent to the Pools of Dee and the Days high point (2 hrs).
From here it’s a gradual descent beneath red screes and the cliffs of Lurcher’s Crag before you gentle drop amongst the very attractive native Scot Pines and heather of the Rothiemuchus Estate. You finish at one of the best local view points in full site of the Lairig Ghru (3hrs). We’ll be there to meet and transfer you the short distance back to Fraoch Lodge for a well deserved “Cake O’clock”, a shower and one of Rebecca’s lovely home cooked evening meals.
Morning of Departure: Depart after breakfast.

Scot Mountain Holidays is the ONLY adventure tour operator in Highlands of Scotland with a combined home and guest lodge. We strive to be more than just an tour. We aim to provide you with a ‘home away from home’ on your adventures. We thought of no better way of doing this than to welcome you into our own home.
We have owned and operated Fraoch Lodge as our home base and business since 1999. In that time, we have come to embrace our guests as members of our extended Highland family.
We source our meals from locally produced and home grown ingredients to provide you with the most delicious flavours and traditions the area has to offer (while minimising our impact on the environment, too). Our dining room and lounge are shared spaces where we gather with guests and friends to share in the holiday and offer you extensive knowledge of your tour.
No matter the season, the Cairngorms and Fraoch Lodge is a place to relax and explore all its beauty and comforts, and we hope to make you feel as at home as we are.
We have achieved Gold Star Awards from the world’s most highly respected green accreditation scheme, Green Tourism, and were awarded Highly Commended in their Green Star Awards 2013 for both Scot Mountain Holidays and Fraoch Lodge. We offer a Green Travel Discount of £15 to any guests who travel to us by public transport. Our primary aim is to minimise the carbon footprint of our holidays, and to this end we donate 1% of the price of our tours to the RSPB’s Abernethy Reforestation project.
It is a holistic approach we have to the care of the environment. Andy your adventure guide has a passion for the natural world – whether it’s the flora, fauna or fungi. He has a background in geology and a lifelong interest in natural history, as well as being a keen gardener. He knows a Golden Plover from a Dotterel, a Green Shank and a Dunlin. He also makes no apologies to being very excitable upon spying a Golden Eagle!
