Autumn in the Cairngorms: things to do when the days are shorter

Autumn is a lovely time to visit the Cairngorms. The summer crowds have thinned, the landscape takes on a completely different character and the changing colours of the birch and Scots pine forests can make even a familiar walk feel new.

But there is one obvious difference from summer: the days are getting shorter.

For some people, that makes autumn the perfect time for a Highland break. You don’t necessarily need to plan a full week of long mountain days. Instead, you can combine shorter walks with wildlife watching, cycling, learning new skills or simply enjoying some of the other things that make the Cairngorms such a special place.

Here are some of our favourite ways to make the most of an autumn visit.

Enjoy a shorter day on the hills

There’s no rule that says a walking holiday has to involve an eight-hour day in the mountains.

In fact, autumn can be an excellent time for shorter walks. Cooler temperatures make walking more comfortable, the forests are often at their most colourful and the lower angle of the sun can give the landscape a particularly atmospheric quality.

A shorter walk also leaves time to do something else with your day. You might spend the morning exploring a hill or forest trail and have an afternoon to visit somewhere interesting, enjoy a good lunch or simply relax back at Fraoch Lodge.

For walkers who don’t have a full week available, this makes an autumn walking break particularly appealing. A few days away can still provide plenty of time outdoors without needing to make every day a full mountain expedition.

Of course if mountain walking is your thing, you can still do longer hikes (or turn them into expeditions with an early start deep in the mountains to make the most of the daylight); but be sure to pack a headtorch and make sure you are very familiar with your proposed route or join us for an autumn munros extravaganza.

If you’re lucky we might even be able to offer one of the really special experiences of the autumn – the northern lights!

Look for wildlife in the autumn

Autumn brings some exciting wildlife opportunities to the Cairngorms.

One of the most spectacular is the annual red deer rut. As the stags compete for the attention of the hinds, the hills and glens can echo to the sound of roaring. Seeing deer during the rut is never guaranteed – these are wild animals in a large landscape – but autumn is a particularly memorable time to be out looking and listening for them.

As the evenings draw in, there are also opportunities to experience some of the Cairngorms’ nocturnal wildlife.

An evening mammal watch, for example, gives you a very different perspective on the countryside. Rather than concentrating on covering miles, you can slow down, sit quietly and see what appears as daylight fades.

This is one of the advantages of autumn: activities that would involve waiting until quite late in the evening during midsummer suddenly become much more accessible. If you’re interested in a mammal watch as part of a full itinerary, check out our Wild Cairngorms itinerary

A close encounter with the wild Reindeer roaming the Cairngorms National Park

Autumn is a good time to improve your navigation

If you’ve spent the summer walking familiar routes, autumn is also a good time to develop your navigation skills.

Shorter days and less predictable weather make it particularly important to know where you are and where you are going. But you don’t have to wait until you’re caught out in poor conditions to learn.

A navigation course or weekend can give you the opportunity to practise using a map and compass, understand contours, plan a route and build confidence away from well-marked paths.

It’s also a good time of year to think ahead. The skills you learn on an autumn navigation weekend can make you more confident when winter walking arrives.

Map reading in the Cairngorms

Get out on a mountain bike

Autumn isn’t just for walkers.

The Cairngorms have an excellent network of tracks and trails, making them a great destination for a mountain biking short break. Cooler temperatures can make cycling particularly enjoyable, while the changing colours of the forests provide a very different backdrop from summer.

A short break can work well if you don’t have time for a longer holiday. You can spend your days exploring trails by bike and still have time to enjoy the food, scenery and hospitality of the Highlands.

Book our Classic Cairngorms Mountain Biking trails or ask us for a centre based break or combine the 2. You can even put together a mountain biking and whisky tasting break if that floats your boat.

Mountain Biking in the Cairngorms

Try something completely different: the Highland Yarn Weekend

Not every autumn adventure needs to involve a hill.

Autumn is, after all, a rather good season for wool, knitting and other crafts. As the evenings become longer and cooler, there is something particularly appealing about settling down with a project after a day exploring the Highlands.

This November we’re trying something a little different with our Highland Yarn Weekend, created in collaboration with Sarah at Flock and Saunter, Johnston’s Wool Mill (Elgin), & Auld Mill Alpacas. Hopefully the Crafty Guid Wives will join us too to show us how crafts have developped down the ages.

The weekend combines knitting tuition and local wool-related experiences with accommodation, meals and time to enjoy the Cairngorms. There are opportunities to learn about the journey from fleece to finished yarn, meet local producers and makers, and spend time with other people who enjoy making things.

It isn’t a walking holiday – and that’s rather the point.

The weekend is another way of experiencing the Highlands, with the landscape, local producers, good food and the relaxed atmosphere of Fraoch Lodge providing the setting.

Make a short Highland break work for you

Perhaps the biggest advantage of visiting the Cairngorms in autumn is that you don’t have to approach your trip in exactly the same way as a summer holiday.

You might spend one day on the hills, another learning navigation, and another exploring by bike. You might make time for a wildlife experience in the evening or simply enjoy an afternoon with a book and a cup of tea after a morning’s walk.

For those with limited holiday time, this can make an autumn short break surprisingly rewarding. You can still have plenty of time outdoors, but you don’t need to spend every daylight hour chasing a summit.

And there are things you can experience in autumn that you simply can’t experience in the same way at the height of summer – from the colours of the forests and the sound of roaring stags to darker evenings that make nocturnal wildlife watching much more practical.

So if you’re wondering whether it’s worth coming to the Cairngorms once the summer holidays are over, our answer is yes.

You just need to change the rhythm of your Highland adventure.

A Wee Blether About the Weather

They say talking about the weather is a national pastime in Britain, but here in Scotland? It’s practically a competitive sport.

We don’t just comment on the weather — we categorise it, name it, and then use those names as an excuse to launch into a good blether with whoever’s nearest (whether they like it or not).

And because our weather changes faster than you can say “Put the kettle on,” we’ve got a whole dictionary of brilliant Scots words to help describe exactly what’s falling from the sky — or creeping in from the sea — at any given moment.

So next time you’re at Fraoch Lodge, whether you’re sipping tea after a walk or pulling on your boots for another adventure, you’ll be able to impress the locals by knowing your smirr from your stoating.

Wild Camping in Scotland: Freedom, Responsibility, and the Roadside Problem

Scotland is often hailed as a camper’s paradise—home to some of the last truly wild spaces in Britain, with the rare freedom to roam and pitch a tent in remote landscapes. But in recent years, that freedom has sparked debate. Is wild camping under threat? And more importantly, do we all mean the same thing when we talk about “wild camping”?

At Scot Mountain Holidays, we think it’s time to draw a clear line between true wild camping and roadside camping—because they’re not the same thing at all.

What Is Wild Camping—Really?

True wild camping is what we offer on our guided expeditions: camping on foot, far from roads, buildings, and car parks. It usually means hiking for at least an hour into the hills or forests, carrying everything you need in your pack, and choosing a spot with care—leaving no trace behind.

It’s peaceful, immersive, and quiet. You’re unlikely to see another soul. The kind of place where red deer graze nearby and golden eagles might sweep overhead.

This is the kind of camping protected by Scotland’s access laws and encouraged under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code—when done responsibly.

And What It’s Not: Roadside and “Dirty” Camping

In contrast, roadside camping often involves pitching up just off a layby, or on the edge of a loch accessible by car. Many of these spots have become magnets for crowds during the warmer months. And unfortunately, this kind of camping has led to serious problems: litter, human waste, fire damage, and noise pollution—not to mention strained relationships with local communities.

This isn’t what the Scottish Outdoor Access Code means by “wild camping.” In fact, many of the issues now being debated—such as whether camping should be further restricted or permitted only in certain zones—stem directly from the impact of this inappropriate roadside camping, not from the quiet camper tucked away in the hills.

Why It Matters: Freedom Depends on Responsibility

Scotland’s unique access laws are something to be cherished. But they rely on a shared understanding that freedom comes with responsibility. If we lose that balance, we risk losing the very freedoms that make this land so special.

At Scot Mountain Holidays, we teach and practise true Leave No Trace principles. On our wild camping trips, we carry out everything—even food waste. We camp in small groups. Our food is homemade and packed sustainably at Fraoch Lodge—no foil packets or single-use plastics here.

This is wild camping done properly. The kind of experience that fosters a deep connection with nature, not just a convenient night outdoors.

The Future of Wild Camping in Scotland

The conversation around camping in Scotland isn’t going away anytime soon. But if we’re going to find the right balance, we need to be precise with our language—and our actions.

Let’s stop lumping all campers together. Let’s celebrate and protect the tradition of truly wild camping—while working to address the challenges of roadside and inappropriate camping through education, infrastructure, and clearer guidelines.

Because if you’ve ever woken up to the mist curling over a Highland loch with no sound but the birdsong… you’ll know it’s worth preserving.

Unplugging in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park

We recently experienced a loss of broadband service here at Fraoch Lodge. It was panic stations all round.

We live in a world where our phones tell us the weather, the time, the route, what to eat, how to feel, and when to sleep. We wake up to the glow of notifications and go to bed after “just one more scroll.” But what happens when you switch it all off—even for a weekend?

Would you be able to enjoy a digital detox weekend?

At Fraoch Lodge, nestled in the tranquil village of Boat of Garten, we believe the answer is a resounding yes—and more than that, we believe your mind and body will thank you for it.

Why Try a Digital Detox?

A digital detox doesn’t mean living in silence or boredom. It means swapping screens for real scenery. It’s giving your nervous system a break from pings and scrolls. It’s waking up not to headlines, but to birdsong and Highland air.

Studies show that taking regular breaks from screens can:

Improve sleep and reduce stress

Reconnect you with nature and your companions

Boost creativity and attention span

Reduce feelings of comparison, FOMO, and overwhelm

Our new Digital Detox Weekends are designed to ground you gently, not shock you into silence. You’ll still be busy—just in a completely different way.

What You’ll Do:

We get it. The idea of switching off entirely can feel uncomfortable. But don’t worry—you’ll be supported. We have:

We’re lucky to be based in the Cairngorms National Park—a vast wilderness of forest, mountain, and wildlife.

What If There Is No Snow? A Guide to Winter Courses with Scot Mountain Holidays

One of the most frequently asked questions from those joining our winter courses is: What if there is no snow? Although we can’t control the weather, we can almost guarantee there will be snow—especially on the high peaks during winter and early spring. However, for those still concerned, let us put your worries to rest.

Winter in the Cairngorms: A Unique Environment

The Cairngorms are home to Britain’s most permanent snow beds, some of which persist well into July or even early August. The high altitude and vast plateau of the Cairngorms make them a natural snow trap. Even in milder winters, the unique topography and wind patterns often ensure that snow is captured and retained in key areas. According to a study by the Royal Meteorological Society, the Cairngorm plateau experiences snow coverage for an average of 76 days per year, making it one of the most reliable locations for snow in the UK.

What Happens if Snowfall is Minimal?

If, for some reason, the winter is unusually mild and snowfall is limited, it’s not the end of the world. Winter Skill courses with Scot Mountain Holidays are designed with flexibility in mind. Snow is just one of three critical factors that influence the course—the other two being wind (which facilitates snow drifting) and the expansive Cairngorm plateau (which helps to capture and hold snow).

Even if snow levels are lower, the skills taught during our courses remain relevant. In fact, hard, icy snow that forms after a thaw and subsequent freeze is often ideal for teaching crampon techniques. Fresh snow, while beautiful, doesn’t always add additional value to winter skills training.

A Track Record of Success

In the 25 winter seasons that Scot Mountain Holidays has been running Winter Skills courses and hiking holidays, no course has ever been cancelled due to a lack of snow. This incredible track record highlights the reliability of the Cairngorms as a winter training destination.

Beyond the Snow: Other Factors to Consider

While snow is a strong likelihood on the peaks where our courses take place, there are many other elements that make your experience memorable. Thick, deep snow can sometimes make routes more strenuous. On the other hand, mixed conditions offer a chance to practice a wide variety of essential skills, including:

Navigation in poor visibility

Using crampons on icy terrain

Avalanche awareness and safe route selection

These skills are just as important, if not more so, than simply walking on deep snow.

The Bigger Picture

Remember, winter skills are about preparing you for all types of conditions you might encounter in the mountains. Snow is a bonus, but not a requirement. The camaraderie, expert instruction, and opportunity to immerse yourself in Scotland’s stunning winter landscape are what truly make Scot Mountain Holidays’ courses unforgettable.

So, whether the snow is thick, patchy, or concentrated in specific areas, rest assured that your Winter Skills course will still be an incredible and valuable experience. The Cairngorms’ rugged beauty, combined with expert guidance, ensures your time with us is both safe and rewarding. As one participant noted, “The course was transformational—I learned so much, regardless of snow levels.”

Ready to Learn?

Join us this winter to develop your confidence and skills in one of the UK’s most dramatic settings. With Scot Mountain Holidays, you’re in expert hands, and no matter the snow conditions, we’ll make sure your time in the Cairngorms is unforgettable.

How About an Active Way to Bring in the New Year?

Looking for an active New Year. Looking for a fresh, invigorating way to end the year and start 2025 on a high note? Our New Year Winter Walking Break from 27th December to 2nd January offers an unforgettable blend of adventure, skill-building, and celebration.

Why Choose This Trip?

This isn’t your typical New Year experience. Say goodbye to overindulging on the sofa and hello to crisp winter air, stunning Highland landscapes, and the camaraderie of like-minded adventurers. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a beginner, this trip is a unique opportunity to connect with nature and yourself.

Reconnect with Nature: Immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the Scottish Highlands during the magical winter season. Explore serene trails, snow-dusted peaks, and dramatic scenery far from the noise of daily life.

Learn Essential Winter Skills: You’ll gain confidence in the mountains by mastering winter walking safety techniques, including how to use an ice axe, cramponing, and how to arrest a sliding fall. No prior winter walking experience? No problem—we’ve got you covered!

Relax in Comfort: Forget roughing it—your cozy base at Fraoch Lodge provides a warm, welcoming retreat each night with hearty meals and excellent company.

Celebrate in Style

This trip isn’t all about the trails. Your adventure culminates in the lively street party in Grantown-on-Spey, where you’ll ring in the New Year with music, dancing, and fireworks under the starry Highland skies.

Who’s This For?

This experience is perfect for anyone active who enjoys the mountains and loves the idea of blending adventure with a touch of comfort and community. If you’ve got a passion for the outdoors and want to start 2025 with purpose and excitement, this trip is for you.

Why Now?

The week between Christmas and New Year can feel like a no-man’s-land. Instead of spending it stuck in the same routine, why not embrace something different? Our winter walking break offers the perfect balance of activity, relaxation, and celebration.

Don’t wait too long—spaces are limited, and this trip fills up fast!

“It’s all in the Wood” – or how to choose great malt whisky

Adventure Guide Andy Bateman of Scot Mountain Holidays guides you through the mist of romance and hype, and around the pitfalls in choosing a fine bottle of malt whisky.

Scottish Malt Whisky is simply not Scotch unless it’s been matured in an oak cask. Up until this point it is just spirit from the still. Essentially a mix of alcohol & water plus e.g. elements of smoke should the barley been dried over a peat fire.

A complex interaction between the oak and the spirit takes place during maturation with the alcohol drawing out many of the oils and other components of the wood. It’s the presence of these oils that gives the whisky’s depth of flavour and breadth of character. This is what Malt Whisky is so let’s look at ‘journey” these oils take during the whisky making process.

An activity for all whisky lovers when visiting Scotland.

Quality of the Wood – are the oils still present?

Firstly, if there isn’t quality in the wood you won’t get the quality in the whisky. The oak casks are used a number of times and with each maturation, oils are removed from the wood. If you mature spirit in an exhausted cask, it doesn’t matter how long it slumbers, the whisky will lack quality. The two questions that need to be asked are:

How many times the cask has been used previously?

The majority of Scotch Malt Whisky is matured in ex-American Bourbon casks. This first maturation of Bourbon removes the harsher notes from the new oak. After the subsequent 1st and 2nd maturations of Scotch Malt whisky the wood starts to loose it’s quality. Up to 60% of the vital ingredients can be drawn out during the first maturation with the whisky produced from 3rd and subsequent maturations often being of a lower standard.

2. Is it Single Cask?

Malt whisky production is a batch process and each cask has its own individual characteristics depending on a range of factors. The world of single cask malt whisky is infinitely varied. For the malt marketeer this has traditionally presented a problem of consistency. Understandably when you find a whisky you like, you want to know that the next bottle will taste the same. This is where the Master Blender (aka “The Big Nose”) comes in. They will marry together up to 100 casks from the same distillery to produce a consistent single malt*. Some of these will be good 1st or 2nd refill casks, others will be the not-so-good 3rd or 4th generation.

* A blended whisky is a mixture of malt whiskies from different distilleries and grain whisky.

Coopers employed on piece-work rates at the Speyside Cooperage make and refurbish oak casks

Age of the Whisky –

has the spirit had enough time to draw the oils out of the wood?

The traditional length of time that the spirit needs to mature is an issue for the industry. Due to demand there has been a recent tendency to downplay the importance of the age. Traditionally it was around 10 years or more. Some have partly got around it by decreasing the cask size to increase the wood to spirit ratio and hence shorten the maturation period. Laphroaig’s Quarter Cask expression being a prime example. There are some good young single malts but this is not to infer the maturation period is not a very important part of the process. It takes time for the oils to be drawn out of the wood. The harsher flavours are softened over time and so the age is an important factor in the quality of the final product.

Chill Filtering – have some of the oils been removed before bottling?

Scotch Whisky is matured in the cask above 60% ABV i.e. “Cask strength”. The market for Cask Strength whisky is small and most people who enjoy a tipple find it too strong. Diluting cask strength whisky down to the industry agreed standard of around 40% abv greatly improves the marketability through reducing the price as well as improving the palate.

The problem now is the equilibrium that established itself in the cask is altered and there is now no longer a high enough concentration of alcohol to support the oils. There is a tendency to for the whisky to go hazy.

To overcome this problem the long chain oils in most commercial malt whisky are removed by chill filtering but it is these longer chain oils that give the whisky it’s depth of flavours and breadth of “character”. The chill filtering also removes some of the variability and makes the Master Blenders job a little easier in creating that brand flavour.

Colouring Added?

A large number of commercial malt whiskies are coloured with the addition of Caramel. This also affects the flavour of the whisky.

Independent bottlings

Distilleries are often produce casks which don’t fit in with the taste profiles they wish to create and are happy to sell these on to Independent Bottlers. It’s through these companies that you often get some of the best whisky at a good price.

What to look for on the bottle labelling – how to choose great whisky:

Cask Provenance – there is usually an indication of what the cask has been previously used for as well as hopefully how many times the case has been used e.g. 1st or 2nd refill/generation.

Single Cask. It is usually stated if it is but sometimes it’s indicated by the number of bottles from the cask e.g. No 5 out of 243 bottles.

Age – if it isn’t stated a bottling date and a distillation dated may be given. Once the whisky is bottled the maturation stops so the difference between the 2 will give you the age. If an age statement is not given then it probably is less than ten years old. Scrutinise carefully whisky that states its non-chill filtered but doesn’t have an age statement. There may not have been adequate time for the oils to have been drawn out of the wood in the first place.

Non-chill filtered – it should state this and is invariably confirmed by the ABV being 64% or above so as to avoid the whisky appearing cloudy/hazy. If the whisky is below 46% ABV it’s a sure sign it’s been chill filtered.

Natural colour indicates no caramel colouring has been added. It’s tempting but don’t ever judge a malt whisky by its colour. Some of the palest whiskies have had the strongest flavours.

Leave No Trace

In the age of heightened environmental awareness, the principles of Leave No Trace are more crucial than ever, especially as wild camping experiences a surge in popularity. Despite the breathtaking beauty of Scotland’s landscapes, social media platforms are inundated with reports of litter and irresponsible waste management in some of the country’s most cherished spots. With the recent boom in camper van tourism, coupled with an increase in roadside camping, it’s evident that a minority of individuals are failing to uphold the principles of responsible outdoor stewardship.

e.g.

Addressing the Issue:

In the short term, finding solutions to these challenges may seem daunting. The fear of contracting illnesses, such as the coronavirus, has led many to prioritize personal safety over environmental responsibility. This has resulted in a concerning disregard for waste disposal, particularly human waste, in outdoor settings.

Potential solutions include:

Implementing educational signage on proper outdoor toileting practices.

Equipping rangers with collapsible trowels for sale to promote responsible waste management.

Restricting roadside camping to self-contained campervans or caravans with onboard toilets.

Considering the deployment of additional rangers or portable toilets, albeit with financial implications that require careful consideration.

The Role of Education and Advocacy:

It’s imperative to address the root causes behind these behaviors. Many individuals fail to grasp the connection between their actions and the degradation of natural landscapes. Some even harbor the misconception that litter left outdoors will miraculously disappear—an assumption that is disproven by the enduring impact of waste on Scotland’s delicate ecosystems.

Our Approach:

At Scot Mountain Holidays we are steadfast advocates of Leave No Trace principles and adhere to the reduce-reuse-recycle ethos. Our commitment extends to our Wilderness Glamping Expeditions, where we prioritize environmental stewardship without compromising on comfort.

Practical Tips for Responsible Wild Camping:

When camping near roadways, ensure proper waste disposal by carrying a shovel and burying waste at least 30 minutes away from the road.

Maintain a small wash bag containing essentials for outdoor toileting, including hand sanitizer, biodegradable toilet paper, a collapsible shovel, and a lighter for burning used paper.

Please – if you’re going to camp by the roadside, by which we mean under 30 minutes walk from the road or within sight of cars/a road – pack a shovel and make sure you bury your waste. Once you’ve prepared your toilet site and done your business, you can use the lighter to burn the paper, then bury what’s left. Human waste will degrade far more quickly if it is buried.

What we consider to be wild camping

It’s a shame that wild camping is getting such a bad name a the moment here in the Highlands. We like to distinguish between roadside camping, dirty camping and wild camping. Our new Wilderness Glamping Expedition is really “pure” wild camping following the Leave No Trace principles and the Scottish Outdoor Access Code completely without sacrificing comfort.

Our Tentipi on the wilderness expeditions

Is it the case long-term though that camping in whatever form it takes is really the problem? Perhaps we’re facing a more serious issue as per Chris Townsend’s article below.
