Tour of the High Pays d’Orb
Our donkeys accompany you on a journey discovering an amazing variety of scenery: small hills covered in vineyards to plateaux carved by deep valleys; from red earth to white limestone and also passing through black, volcanic geology.
There’s also a contrast between the villages of the winemakers with their gently sloping vineyards and the small sheep farms which produce the mil to make Roquefort cheese; between the wildness of some of the countryside and the charm of rural French villages like Dio, Lunas and Joncels.
The climate is a temperate one with Mediterranean temperatures relative to the altitude and geographic situation. It can be very warm in the high summer, but there are a number of swimming holes, suitable for picnic breaks and some of the gîtes have swimming pools where you can relax and cool off in the evening. Many of the hosts who run the accommodation we use are interesting and engaging personalities, who help us to make this a very agreeable trip.
This is a trip which appeals to amateur geologists and lovers of architecture & culture (beautiful chateaux and churches, roman chapels) and typical farms. You will also be hiking along the famous route from Arles to Compostella at times.
This trip is recommended to families with children who are used to hiking but it is equally possible to do with older children or with a group of adults. We suggest a route for each day but it is often possible to extend your route.
Independent hiking with a donkey and your family. If you have a young family, you may have found that you’re hiking opportunities have been massively reduced since your kids arrived. Now is your chance to get back out hiking without having to carry your kids. Your donkey will be a patient companion on your route. Helping to carry not only your baggage, but also on occasions your child when they are tired. Your children will enjoy the opportunity to lead or ride the donkey. Everything will be arranged for you in advance so you settle back and relax into your holiday.
